I don't think he wrote much of his stuff, but the man could sing a song.
Not an outlaw, but the womens.

Not a songwriter.
Modern GOAT.
He hit the scene in 1982 or so. Cash, willie, Waylon. We're already established by the 60's and 70's.
Hard to rank George though. He didn't write and can't play guitar.
Country music has some absolute guitar wizards going way back.

Like the above guy said, not a songwriter, doesn't really play guitar, heck of a singer. He's certainly a great performer and has had a ton of success. Tough to rank though.

Somewhere behind George Jones and Glen Campbell

He's certainly up there with all time country singers. He's a great singer. You could put him in the same group as Hank Williams, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Merle Haggard.

I like George Strait, but I'm not sure where I'd rank him. He, or someone working for/with him, was very smart though. Generally speaking, the songs he released as singles were the best songs on each album. The ones he didn't release are not that good on most albums.
He wrote a couple of songs for one of his albums(forget which one) and they were terrible.

He sort of like the Neil Diamond of country singers.

Clint Black >>> George Strait.

Probably top 10 or so...solid voice but none of his songs give me chills or make ya go 'wow'!
Off hand I'd rank above him..
George Jones
Merle
Keith whitley
Hank Sr
Garth
And the most underrated ever...Ronnie milsap

He's the best C&W golfer. As far as music, I don't know that I would have him my top 10. Very good, but not great.

Somewhere below Eric Church and above Jason Aldean
Seriously, I don't think he'd make my top 25

All of the lists ITT w/o Waylon and Merle are absolute jokes.

I'd have Kris Kristofferson in my top ten just based on the songs he wrote.
