The Deere's and Cub Cadet's you see at the box stores are the "entry level" mowers.

Go to a dealership that sells Deere or Cub Cadets and compare the differences between the Home Depot models and the next series up. For a little bit more you can get better quality and features.

The thing I always look at is how thick the mower deck's metal is. I HATE picking up limbs and have a tendency to run over shite I shouldn't, so a tough mower deck is #1 for me.

Solid advice. I'm not looking to pull discs or the like, but it's looking like I'm going to have to spend more than I'd hoped.

Craftsman with a Briggs engine is a very well built tractor. Get the model with the cast iron front axil. Mine is 10 years old and no problems.

Buy one from a shop that can service it, and is not three towns over.

Retainage of a good Mexican is hard. I worked with a good tile guy for a while. Then he got deported one day and I was left starting over trying to find a new Mexican that was worth a damn.

I did a CL search for Nashville. I searched "Garden tractor 54" There are a few of the Husqvarna LGT2654. Some have 50 hours on them in the $1800 range. One has 550 hours for $750. This may not be bad but you cannot be sure if it was properly maintained.

There is also a Craftsman that comes up with this search. It is obviously made by Husqvarna and is a black twin. Asking $1200.

A search for GT 5000 brings up one for $800. It looks OK for the money but the hours on all of their meters is important. Residential use should put about 50 hours per year on it. If you leave the key on it will put about 78 hours on it before the battery wears down. I have done that twice.

Good luck

A tractor isn't worth a shite without a 3 point hitch so find an older used one

These are garden tractors. They do not have a 3 point hitch or PTO for implements.

Then it's not a real tractor. Find an old JD 4020. You'll thank me

I bought a cub cadet 46" last year and it was about the same price at a dealer as it was at Home Depot/Lowes but the dealer told me he would come get it for repairs, etc. so that's who I bought it from.

Do you also hammer finish nails with a sledge?

Also, Cub Cadet is made by MTD. Only Murray is more cheaply made. (In Box store models)

Ended up at a Husqvarna dealer today and talked with one the guys there. He recommended a 18k46 for my needs and budget. Has a Yamaha engine, which seems to fare well on online reviews. They also offer free delivery and pickup/drop off for service if I buy through them. Seems legit for what I'm looking for, and I'd rather buy from a local shop over a big box. I'm going to sleep on it, but I'm thinking of pulling the trigger.

I laugh when city folks call riding lawn mowers "lawn tractors". It's a riding lawn mower and not even close to any type of tractor.

Unless, you are referring to a full size (min 140hp) tractor with a belly mower or a bush hog that attaches to the rear of a tractor.
