So...why are so many people down on CBB and the tournament?

Add to this "top ten" and rank them. These are some theories I've heard, and some of my own opinions:
1. one-and-done players, and some cases entire teams
2. the death of the Big East
3. blatant mockery of amateurism and college athletics
4. filling out brackets jumped the shark--now your mama fills out a bracket
5. people fill out 10 different brackets and claim that they "called" a major upset when they had it on one of the 10 brackets
6. television hype/overanalysis--"Bracketology," turning Joe Lunardi into the Mel Kiper of basketball, and 2-hour tournament specials
7. you don't know the players anymore--It's just a handful of name-brand teams winning year-in/year-out with a couple of Cinderellas thrown in the mix
8. season starts too early now, and with the Super Bowl pushed back into Feburary, many people only pay attention to the regular season for a couple of weeks
9. "First Four," "play-in games," or whatever the Hell they're calling it this year--North Carolina A&T or whoever has to fly to Dayton to play on Tuesday and then fly to San Antonio the next day to lose by 38 to Kansas 2 days later
10. Final Fours and usually Sweet Sixteen/Elite Eight in football stadiums instead of arenas

Re: #10 it's always fun to watch the first 4 minutes of each final four game as the teams adjust to the depth perception

I've been down on basketball for a while as a whole. So it's not just the tourney
Posted on 3/14/16 at 11:39 am to lsutigers1992
people arent down on the tournament. its literally the exact opposite
Posted on 3/14/16 at 11:39 am to lsutigers1992
No clue, but I like CBB and the Tournament.

The Big East is still alive and thriving.
I think the rule changes have hurt the game, the differing styles of play allowed for some great games. Plus the new hardship rule changes have broken teams up, so major teams are constantly changing year to year and you can not emotionally invest as a casual fan.

I wish CBB was more like CFB in this regard.
I can easily keep up with the stars of CFB and their teams, as they become familiar and memorable.
With all these one and done players, I feel like the quality of the game isn't as good as it could be.

Whatre you talking about? This is one of the most exciting seasons in a while

I'm very excited about this week and weekend. One of my favorite times of the year.

The relationship between people who fill out brackets and the NCAA tournament is like the relationship between fantasy football and the NFL.
Yes, more casual viewers watch for selfish interests, but the the purists complain that the product itself in both cases is in decline.
I still watch, but I won't take a sick day and hang out in a sports bar for the entire day like I used to.
Another thing I forgot about in the original list is how the last 2 minutes of a game last 37 minutes.

CBS drew a 3.7 overnight rating for NCAA Selection Show. Lowest in around 20 years. First-ever 2-hour format in 2016. Also had bracket leak.
It'll just keep growing and growing and growing.........
And it IS a shite product now. But go on with your Darren Rovell "the numbers don't lie" analysis.

WCA do you like the new shot clock rules?
I know people hated the "bad offense" but I think that is more of a result of the coaches not allowing the 1 to run an offense. The micromanagement of games is a bit much.

i do like the new shot clock. i get what youre saying about coaches micromanaging too much, but the new shot clock helps in eliminating that. it would never happen, but i would love to get that shot clock down to 24

So because the selection show sucked and the bracket leaked, people are down college basketball?

I would have liked it to stay at 45. But we have had that discussion. I think coaches over think and do not trust their players.
If you go watch the game in the 90's the players ran the show and coaches allowed them to make decisions. I do not know what has changed that and can not even tell when the change happened.
I think maybe it started to change with Izzo in his FF run after Cleaves.

probably because now you have so many teams that are starting players that dont have the same level of experience that they used to

Not completely. It mostly sucks because the viewership data includes all the "I had Duke in my bracket and they lost so I'm not watching anymore" douchebags who are the ones influencing the future direction of college basketball.

Maybe the horrific teaching that goes on in HS and AAU level at times also leads to it, maybe?
I really think if someone started to run a PG camp you would see the switch back. But are kids willing to go learn some of those things when they see PG like Wall, Curry, etc on TV?

I'm not sure how this would equate to people being down on the tournament. That's a really hipster mindset to have..."I was filling out brackets before it was cool, now that everyone is doing it I don't like it anymore"
