Saltmix and making RO Water is a must and can add up.
I have my own Ro/Di filtration system with 50 gallon mix barrel.

MJ2 my advice corrals and anms take a lot of special care. My best advice great water flow and filtration. I stick to my saltwater fish. I got two 30 gallon tanks. Good luck with the corals and anms.

I gave up trying to catch a striped damsel in my tank. It took Katrina for that thing to die.

Best advice is to take your time and do your research. It's hard looking at an empty tank for a few weeks but follow the advice of others.

I've been curing this rock for a year in a bin with saltwater flowing over it.

I purchased everything from a guy on Craigslist. He took the system down and had it in his storage shed. The live rock was killed but I cured it and plan on re seeding it.

This ain't my first rodeo with saltwater tanks. At one time I had 5 tanks setup at once in my home. Even had a leopard shark in a 300 gallon tank.
It's just been almost 20 years and I'm sure technology has changed and wanted to get people's opinions about what to do with this system.
It has a 20 gallon acrylic sump underneath it. Has bio balls. Not sure if these things are still the way to go in a sump filter or if something better has come along.

That stand is definitely enough for a 55gal tank You have more support than my 100gal stand does.

Also I have a 20 gal long if you want it

Look up Southeast Louisiana Aquarium Society on Facebook. SELAS.

They have a Facebook page dedicated to people selling equipment.
will do.

I used to belong to the Coral Connection in New Orleans a long time ago.

man my buddy got me into the hobby and i bought a stand for cheap but it ended up being too narrow for the tank. i decided to build one and i got a bunch of free 2x4s from a scrap pile at a house they're building near me. if this thing collapses, i'm out a free tank and it'll destroy the floors in my brand new house, plus my wife will murder me. better safe than sorry.

also, i will take the 20 long. i'll be in BR wednesday but i'm on kind of a tight schedule. e-mail me. eguttierrez1984@gmail.com

The best way to cycle is pure ammonia, which can be purchased at ACE hardware. Make sure it's pure and doesn't foam when the bottle is shaked.

This is the best and only way you should cycle a new tank; especially with finicky salt water fish. The process takes longer, but it allows you to pinpoint when the bacteria is in sufficient numbers to process the ammonia and ammonium. Google "fishless cycle."

I was about to ask which shop you visit. I like CC. I primarily did freshwater tanks growing up but I've been wanting to pull the trigger on a serious reef tank for about a year now. I'm concerned about the energy bill more than all else.

I'm sure those new LED fixtures are much more efficient than the old Metal Halide lighting. But I know you have to run skimmers, filters, chillers, etc. Not real sure how much energy that stuff would take to run.
Dedicated solar array to power it all??

I know nothing about aquariums.

I take that back. I know they are expensive, demand upkeep, and there is a lot of information to learn.

I love the way they look and want one in my home.

I started scanning r/aquariums a long time ago. Then i was reading forums about aquariums for hours on end. I still feel like I've been thrown into the deep end of the pool; so much information and too many conflicting opinions.

My question is this: What's the base cost & yearly costs of going the bitch route, if it can even be done? If I wanted to buy a large saltwater tank and have someone local (NOLA) service it monthly, or bimonthly, what's the ballpark range for getting the initial set-up and what's the range for a monthly tank guy that does house calls?

I did a South American tank with Discus and a teacup stingray. Favorite tank I ever had but I found the upkeep more demanding than my saltwater tanks. Discus are very delicate and to flourish require perfect water conditions kept at a low ph, soft water, high temps. Absolutely no tap water. Bought all my water specially prepared from the fish store. Do your research and if you put in the work, definatly worth it.

You should have no problem putting a four foot long tank on that. Your stand looks wider than 12 inches to me.

A 55 gallon tank is about a foot wide, not 18 inches.

A 75 is about 18 inches wide.

Both are a little over 18 inches high.
