Well yeah, I'm not talking about hindsight, though. Guy was knocking down 30 a game and that's all people saw; a supposed great scorer with NBA range yada yada yada
Case in point, he was drafted AHEAD of these guys (read twice to let this sink in) WHY?
Klay Thompson
Alec Burks
Morris twins
Kwahi
Vucevic
Tobias
Faried
Mirotic
Reggie Jackson
Jimmy Butler
Parsons
Ike Thomas
How does fredette get drafted in front of Klay, Kwahi, Butler on any planet?
I'm wary of Heild until I see how he tests and measures at the combine. Think about how he's going to handle the likes of Thompson, Leonard and Butler defending him with their length and atheltism? How will he create his show vs guys like that?
The other side to that coin is scouts that overvalued potential over a guy like J.J. Rediick who had 4 years in college to accumulate enough data to make scouts weary. Despite winning NCAA player of the year and having all the skills that players in the NBA succeed with and enough measurables and discipline to grow the others.
He was taken 11th that year. Got skipped over for high potential guys like international player Mouhammed Sene and Patrick O'Bryant.

I agree, I guess I look at both of their ceiling and like Luwawu more and feel that hes worth that chance.

I respect that and may even agree before the draft gets around here.
Then again maybe luck will finally shine on us and we will hit the jackpot in the lottery and get the 1 or 2 spot and we won't have to worry about all this stuff.

Also for people who haven't checked him out look at his breakdown and tell me this isn't what we need.

Sacramento
Only two mocks I looked at from 2011 had Fredette at 10, ahead of all of those guys

J.J. Rediick
kinda the other side of the coin but
And still wasnt a double digit NBA scorer until his 5th year in the league. Wasn't the player he is now until year seven in the NBA. So you got 4 years of college and 4 years of NBA to hit 10 ppg, and doesnt become a legit NBA starter until he's 28 y/o
JJ has worked HARD to get where he is at, and it obviously took time.
Now, Heild may measure out better than Redick did, thus allowing him to be closer to that 26 y/o Redick than the rookie Redick. In the end, the pick we land will dictate if taking Hield is a value or not.

That's not that good in euro ball, no?
A 104 ORtg's not great either, but it's decent. To be a 2 way player you only need to be competent. I'm also not talking about taking him at 7 unless he blows up in the camp/workout process. There are a lot of teams with multiple picks in this draft, the Pelican's cupboard is so bare trading back is probably the smart play if no future All Stars are on the board.

If we are 6-8 and Murray, Dunn, or Brown are on the board I pick him. I would lean to pick Poeltl but with AD, Asik, and Ajinca he would barely get run. 8-10 range grab him and run.

My only point was showing an example of what I describe as a tendency for people to dismiss 3-4 year guys who don't wow you with measurables but have proven their abilities, in favor of the allure of young guys with measurables and "potential" that haven't proven anything. That it is a pitfall that many teams continually fall victim of and Reddick is an example of that who also happens to be similar to Hield's situation in that both were 4 year player of the year guys that got passed over for sexy upside guys that proved to be fools gold.
Look at McCollum as another example. 2 inch smaller wingspan then Hield, unlike Hield McCollum was heavily knocked for his size, speed and quickness. Like Hield, CJ was a great shooter, who, with his other 4 year college buddy Lillard(who was knocked for his perceived lack of upside and lack of elite athleticism as well) is turning the Trailblazers from a team people thought was in turmoil to being one of the best young backcourts in the league and just combined for 75 points and 10 assists to almost upset the second seed Raptors. McCollum I might add, is posting ungodly percentages post allstar break. Shooting 53% from three.

He was also fortunate that Orlando was patient and committed to his development. Had they jettisoned him early like Sacramento did with Fredette he might be floating around somewhere in Europe right now.

I think that is a lesson every team should be learning. I mean look at Jeff Withey for instance, or Aminu. Both guys we gave up on too soon.
Then again it is also smart to know when to cut ties. A guy like "DJ" Julian Wright was a lost cause early on but we stuck it out too long.

I would love to see Dunn on the Pelicans. He has an all around game and can be a true floor general. Our offense and defense will improve with this guy. But I highly doubt he goes out of top 5 if his shooting keeps improving.

again you are framing Hields athleticism, size and speed as if it is below the threshold where a person can succeed in the NBA. Held is very strong. Just to catch Hield, Luwawu would need to put on 20 pounds of muscle. As AD has shown, that is easier said then done and Luwawu is knocked for his small frame and shoulder width which limits his ability to add mass
Luwawu is 6'7 205 pounds with a 7'2 wingspan at 19-20 years old. Larger wingspans = ability to put on weight easily as that usually means broad shoulders. See Dwight, AD, Giannis.
Video of his strengths
Weaknesses
In comparison, Batum is 6'8 200 pounds, Kawhi is 6'7 229, Deng is 6'9 220, Giannis is 6'11 216, PG13 and Jimmy both weight 220 pounds. It is not unfeasable for him to gain 10-15 pounds easily with NBA nutritionists and training.
Point blank he could make his size work in the NBA easily right now as a rookie, and he also will continue to grow with that wingspan

Not to mention his passing ability and his defesive versatility is the best things about him. He already plays in a system simlar to our own with free motion spacing style.

Say we were to get the 3rd overall pick and Simmons and Ingram went 1 and 2. Who would you guys take at 3?
Posted on 3/6/16 at 12:16 pm to j520
Brown but he scares the shite out of me. He has great size and strength is athletic with great defense but can't shoot for crap and isn't a good offensive player he reminds me of Aminu.

To follow up on Riddick and his struggles early in his career..... While he was an NBA level sharpshooter at Duke, he had holes in his overall offensive game. His handles and dribble drive was weak and he had poor footwork on ball. He couldn't separate from any athletic defender and didn't shoot well off balance. He lacked craftiness overall.
All the flaws mentioned were not present with a guy like McCollum. I feel Hield will be more McCollum than he will be Riddick. Hield will never have any issues getting separation in the league with his elite footwork and super quick release. Put in his work ethic and I think he's one of the safest pick in the draft. His ceiling however is a different story.

Brown looks too much like Evans for my taste. I don't like his jumpshot and he bullying his way to the basket at the Collegiate level. He reminds me of a Sf version of Marcus Smart.

Heild has plenty of problems with separation and his slow first step.
Posted on 3/6/16 at 1:12 pm to 504ByrdGang
His footwork and super quick release allow him to get separation. The kid has no problems getting off a shot at any point in time.

Another fault I have on Heild is his JR Smith style shot selection but that may be more do you him carrying the offensive load. But like I said I like a lot of guys over Heild because he doesn't help our biggest issue of defense.
