I never knew that vermouth had a 6 month shelf life.

And, you're supposed to store it in the fridge. I use so little of it in my martinis. I need to try and find 1/2 bottles of it.

I always get the tall bottle of Martini & Rossi. I have no clue as to how much it is.

I've never understood why vermouth is necessary in a martini. A good gin by itself is fine ...with a drop or two of Angustura Bitters. And AB lasts for a century without refrigeration.

Vermouth is a type of wine. What would you do to a red or white wine if not using it soon?
Yes store it in the refrigerator.

I've seen alot of folks opt for a martini without. On the other hand though, it's not a Manhattan without sweet vermouth.

...and it's not a martini without vermouth. It's a glass of cold gin and not a bad thing by itself. There are so many new gins on the market that are made with a never before seen range of botanicals that may be better enjoyed without the addition of vermouth or other modifiers.
A Martini is gin, with vermouth and an optional drop of orange bitters. For me, either Plymouth or Beefeaters, with Dolin Dry in 4 to 1 ratio. No bitters and either a long lemon peel or an olive depending if I trust the olives to be good.
If you are drinking something else, it's a another drink.
