Meh.

I'm a big Nirvana and Cobain fan myself, but there were plenty of bands that were playing gunge music at the same time and even before Nirvana was. Bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, The Melvins, etc. did just as much IMO.

Underrated- Rainbow w/Dio

Fans of hard rock and metal might be well aware of the bands contributions to heavy music, but most general music fans seem to be unaware of just how monumental those first three albums were, specifically Rising & Long Live Rock 'n' Roll. They pushed the boundaries of progressive heavy music and should be just as lauded as Rush and Uriah Heep for doing so.

The lyrical subject matter of the fantastical, mythical, and legendary, coupled with brutal guitars, drums, and vocals, was something that had never been achieved before in music.

Overrated- Pearl Jam

For a band that contributed one of the most the most perfectly-timed records to mainstream music, Ten, they have not done shite since. Sure, they have a couple of good singles spread out here and there, but for a band touted as the torch-bearers of modern rock, alongside Foo Fighters, I just don't see what all of the fuss is about.

They are a phenomenal collection of musicians and I respect the work each of them has done prior and apart from Pearl Jam, but damn has their legacy leeched off of the success of their debut.

I would argue that neither Vitalogy or VS. could hold a candle to In Utero or even Alice in Chains' Jar of Flies EP.

Cobain did the best job of merging punk ethos with "pop" structures. The fact is that he was late to an indie music scene in the Pacific Northwest which had been in existence several years before Bleach was even released. However, the pain and emotion of his music was palpable and relatable to the younger generation of his time.

I refused to listen to Nirvana until about a year ago, but I can no longer deny just how incredible those last two albums are.

None of the fringe bands such as The Melvins, Green River, Mudhoney, etc., ever concerned themselves with conforming their songwriting styles to popular musicians. The fact is, most of them were fairly shitty songwriters with little understanding of quality melodies and harmonies.

I don't disagree with you necessarily and I guess it's just the contrarian in me, but I just refuse to crown Nirvana as "the Kings of grunge" like so many want to do today.

Disclaimer: 80s/90s grunge is probably my favorite genre of music and I do like Nirvana a lot, I'm not discrediting them for their success at all. It's just that there were several other bands at the same time that were also being nominated and winning Grammys and selling out stadiums as well.

I just threw in Melvins as well before because they were the main band who influenced the whole grunge scene in the northwest. They never appealed to the masses, but I wouldn't disagree with someone that wanted to say that without them Nirvana, soundgarden, etc. have a different sound.

Same here. Nirvana was one of many bands that were part of an exciting change in music back then. They were one of the big ones, but they weren't alone. They became "important" when Cobain killed himself.

IMO Bruce Springsteen and the Rolling Stones are overrated, but its all a matter of opinion.

I think Jerry Jeff Walker is underrated, but a part of me thinks he likes that. I don't think he would be who he is if he had more fame.

I will also add The Jayhawks to the vastly underrated grouping.

Cobain didn't have nearly that influence on the instrument - if anything his influence is in tone, structure and lyrical content.

And that influence is even less when considering the fact that he was trying to make "Smells like Teen Spirit" sound like a Pixies song.

Great fricking call. I love The Verve. I always tell people, "Ya know, they made more songs than Lucky Man and Bittersweet Symphony..."

I understand completely. I struggled to acknowledge their greatness for quite some time. Nirvana's mystique and reputation is as much to do with their unfulfilled potential, as a result of Kurt's death, as it is their actual accomplishments.

I agree that the Melvins were the first remotely 'grunge' band, but I'm not sure that they typified the 'grunge' sound. There was more to grunge than just drop D tuning. Although Buzz was able to demonstrate how loud and powerful the alternative tuning could make the guitar sound for such music, he quickly formed his own musical style of sludge rock/metal which was more influential to bands like Down, Eyehategod, and Acid Bath, then it was Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains.

Green River is much more of the atypical grunge band when you consider sound, philosophy, and style. When I say that I mean that more subsequent bands sound like Green River than they did The Melvins.

KISS brought hard rock from the clubs and theaters to the arenas. That is deserving of some praise.

At the same time, they all but killed the American rock scene with their overcommercialization and shift towards softer musical genres.

Meh - I don't think Dylan is underrated in any way. He's overrated as a recording artist, because he is appropriately rated as one of the greatest songwriters of his generation. He is a whiny, atonal singer who makes Lou Reed and Bruce Springsteen seem like good singers by comparison (there - I said it.)

To put it another way no one would pay Dylan to sing their songs. But most would pay Dylan to write songs for them.

There is little question that KISS changed the way rock music was marketed and sold - having almost as much influence as Elvis and the Beatles in that regard.

But, I've stuck with this thread being about musicianship - while they may be an underrated musical "force" - because of hindsight - and certainly put out some catchy, popular songs - they were of average ability for bands of the era, on the instruments and with the singing themselves (although they all had passable singing voices, certainly rare today, and not universal back then.)

Compared to today's "bands" KISS looks like musical geniuses.

I want to downvote you for Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen being overrated but I totally agree with you about Alex Lifeson being underrated. Dude is frickin awesome and is rarely mentioned when discussing Rush. So.... I'll abstain from voting.
