Was watching Boogie Nights and it hit me that it's a total Goodfellas ripoff. Look, I think Boogie Nights is easily one of the 10 best movies of the last 20 yrs, but if you want to call it an homage, fine but there's many aspects that scream Goodfellas.

1. Camera movement and fast zooms. Almost identical cinematography

2. Similar time period. Yeah I know Goodfellas starts on the 50s, but the bulk of the movie takes place in the 60s, 70s, and early 80s. Boogie Nights is all 70s and 80s. But both are total period pieces that exploit roughly the same point in time with clothes, music, houses, etc. All add to the atmosphere and overall tone of the movies and are basically a character on it's own.

3. Almost exact same story arc.
Young, poor kid gets involved in a shady industry with wild and crazy exploits and characters all while making huge sums of money. Ultimately, drug addiction, excess, and paranoia lead to huge downfall.

4. Seemingly fun, entertaining, movie on the outside is actually a dark cautionary tale at it's core. "You want this life, this is what happens."

I guess it's because I saw Goodfellas a week ago and I couldn't get it out of my head while watching. Both are fantastic films…

Here's PTA's response to that comparison.

quote:

3. GoodFellas (Martin Scorsese) (1990)

The long travelling shot into the Copacabana...some stuff I did in Boogie Nights is compared a lot to that shot, which I obviously admire. But the funny thing is there have been so many shots like that. You can trace that back to Max Ophuls, doing these intricately long things, and obviously to what DePalma has done, but Scorsese was doing it first (of the modern directors). What's obnoxious and so fricking brilliant about Scorsese is that he does these pretentious, insane camera moves that suddenly make perfect sense, and has this incredible forceful energy, but he's never showing off. He's the biggest show-off in the world and we don't even see it."

Dirk diggler wasn't making huge sums of money...some of the characters lived with Jack...Dirk's big show-off is he brought a muscle car and has an apartment with a bedroom... Wow.

He was two porn films away to being back on the streets.

So some mutual elements of cinematography and a few basic plot points and you say ripoff?

Wow. Fail.

Going by your definition, both are ripoffs of the story of Icarus

And the iconic voice over narration... oh wait.

I don't see how this description applies to Goodfellas:
quote:

4. Seemingly fun, entertaining, movie on the outside is actually a dark cautionary tale at it's core. "You want this life, this is what happens."

It was pretty dark from the outset..

I also don't see Goodfellas as a huge period piece. Not like Boogie Nights, which goes so far as a blank screen to introduce the 1980's.

Aside from being completely different stories about completely different subjects, it's essentially the same movie

I've never made the connection between the two movies.

TBH I'm not a fan of Boogie. No desire to ever see it again.

Somewhat off topic, but why didn't Ray Liotta have more success? He was great in Goodfellas. Is that just because of Scorsese making him look good?

Also - is there a general consensus that Goodfellas was Scorsese's best? I feel strongly that it was but don't know how other people look at it.
