So many of these "homeless" are people running scams or are criminals on the run from the law or just lowlifes making a living outside the "system" where all of their income is their's while I'm taved at over 30% that I tell em to frick off any more.
If you have the wherewithal to go around asking/scamming people for money then you have the wherewithal to get a job and work for your money like I do. There are government programs and non-governmental organizations and shelters for the truly homeless person.
I would say 95% of the people on the New Orleans intersections have a racket going on and they treat it as some kind of job. If people didn't give them money, they wouldn't stand out there. There are shelters in the city that provides meals, lodging, and even work programs for these people if they wanted.

I do, but it varies

used to give a can of tuna, that's over 2-dollars a can now...Tho I won't go broke doing it

I'd put singles in my shirt pocket for easy access to giving it away etc

I gave a 20 to a vet

some 5's here and there, it depends on situation

even if they were all scamming, my intentions were good

I live in downtown Houston. Homelessness is a way of life for a lot of people. They get up, get their free meals from the shelters, then walk around all day begging for money. Most have accepted that lifestyle and there are enough kind souls out there to enable it for them. I see the same ones everyday. I refuse to enable. There are zero reasons in this country one needs to be a permanent homeless person.

This. If you had to live under a brige you'd want to get fricked up too.

Chicken or egg question comes to my mind.

In Vegas you see vagrants crouched on all the sidewalk overpasses. I couldn't help but think there must always be a job in a restaurant, hotel or driving a taxi.

I usually don't carry cash and when I do, I forget I have it.

If the opportunity presents itself, I don't mind handing them a couple dollars. Regardless of why/how they got there, my life is better than theirs and the token cash will brighten their day more.

Why be ugly to them?

I usually would buy them food or water directly. It's almost never a bad investment to feed the homeless or anyone for that matter. Surprisingly a lot of them are honest enough to say they want money for alcohol, but that's where I stop being charitable.

Cash? Never.

Food? Yes, but you don't see a lot of them in Gulfport.

Amen. People are homeless because they choose to be. My mission is to help them change their choice, so I don't give them anything.

Wow......glad you've figured ALL of their situations out. With that kind of intellect, please contact OPEC and help get these oil prices worked out.

I gave one of the Grant Park (Atl) homeless dudes a dollar Thursday. First time in years I've given. He asked nicely for 65 cents.

I have a friend who preaches all the time on facebook about how people should give money to homeless people on the street. He always says he keeps extra cash on him to give to homeless people and always talks trash about people who refuses to give money.

Am I the only one who never gives these people money?

your friend is doing it wrong. you should never give money to the homeless and if you end up on vacation in a poor area, NEVER over pay them
