Last I checked, no one I know that went into army reserves has been shot at.

I did the same. I joined the military and a week later I got a letter telling me I got a new program called TAP which became TOPS. Called the recruiter and he told me to go to college. I'd mentally prepared to work for it though. Kept me keeping my grades up.

IMO if we want to consider ourselves the greatest country on the planet easy access for our citizens to get a higher education is essential. 30 years ago we could all find a decent paying job with a good company with only a High School diploma, times have changed and now college graduates are serving us coffee and they are not just liberal arts degrees. A higher educated and gainfully employed populace leads to safer community's for all of us. Poverty and lack of education leads to crimes of desperation. Cause and effect friends

I think serving in the military is a fine and honorable thing to do. I support service in trade for college tuition. I also think that is a fair, equitable trade.
But we also have to remember that the military environment isn't for everyone. There are a good number of kids out there, like me when I was young, who would have loved to have served in the military, but can't due to a disability. Epilepsy stopped me from enlisting.
Though there are a lot of women serving proudly in the armed forces, the vast majority of them have no interest in serving in the military, and women make up the current majority of college students nationwide.
So when we suggest the military as an alternative to student loans, which is a good suggestion, just keep in mind that the option is not as universal as it seems on the surface.
I would suggest an alternate form of service-for-tuition for students like these, perhaps humanitarian-oriented, that could substitute for the military option. I don't really know what that could be, other than an expanded AmeriCorps style program.

In what other ways do you admire these countries? Seriously.... aren't they all in the middle of an immigrant crisis right now? But you probably want to give this country to ISIS because it's just as much theirs as ours.

I agree this country is great because we provide individuals with the ability to rise above their station in life through hard work and education. You become successful by making yourself successful.
But if you think there isn't something to learn from the way Europe and other developed nations run their governments then you are an ethnocentric isolationist.
No nation is perfect and there is no "One size fits all" strategy to governance but we do not hold a monopoly on good ideas. We should study foreign domestic policies and see if there is any applicable benefit to our own society. You'd be surprised at what you find.

Bernie is going to give everyone free college and health insurance for life so why would anyone do anything silly like join the military these days?

Finland and Danish governments have free college because they either tax near 50% or require short stints in the military and sometimes both. Denmark.

I served 4 years in the Navy. It was my intention to earn my degree while enlisted but it quickly became apparent that military life especially submarines is not conducive to earning your degree. But I also served before online degrees became mainstream. Your best bet is to use the GI Bill as I did when you get out or apply for ROTC.
One of my former classmates in the Navy just saw her son receive a $180,000 scholarship to Texas A&M for Naval ROTC.
One great benefit is for medical professionals. You can have most of your medical school paid for if you serve as a military doctor or PA

Post 9-11 GI bill benefits are amazing. A very generous monthly housing allowance, a book stipend plus tuition that would cover any public institution in Louisiana. There are some really good schools out there offering really good degrees online (Arizona State offers a great online engineering program), so you could do your service, and realistically have a degree at the end of your enlistment. And have 4 plus years of work experience in a stressful environment.
What's with all the whining about free education out there? Why are young people afraid to earn it like so many others before them have?
Because actually having to do something is too much work for many of the precious snowflakes out there (they can often be found wearing "Bernie" tshirts).

The military has downsized greatly after Iraq/Afghanistan. The option is still there, but the desk jobs like I had in the Air Force are few and far between. You'll end up a military cop or working the flight line.
