Have any of you used mergansers as crab bait?

For the last two days of the season me and a group went to the coast and while we were hunting we let several fly by. At the time it didn't occur to me that maybe there would be some use for them since they aren't preferred to be eaten.

Anyway, if I/we aren't going to hit our limits next season would it be worth it to kill a couple of them just for crab bait?

a friend of mine actually eats them...I frick with him often.

I haven't found any meat yet that doesn't make good crab bait...I would just pluck them and pin the whole thing in...

We breast ducks, and the remainder of the carcass I use as crab bait with good success.

Definition of Wanton Waste

quote:

According to 12 M.R.S. § 11224, a person may not waste a wild bird or wild animal that has been wounded or killed by that person while hunting. For purposes of this section, "waste" means to intentionally leave a wounded or killed animal in the field or forest without making a reasonable effort to retrieve and render it for consumption or use. A person who violates this section commits a Class E crime.

I stand corrected. "for consumption or use" I'd say that you are using it. Crab bait it is. lol.

It could be over limit and out of season possession would be an issue.

I dont know the south carolica regs, but many states have a separate merganser limit.

As for bait, it should work. I've also heard they are pretty tasty when smoked.

I'm not opposed to trying different ways of cooking them, but I've never killed one because of their reputation of not being very good. I'm gonna kill a few this coming season and try different ways to prep them, but I did have someone else tell me that smoking them is the way to go.

My brother and his buddy shot a few. My buddy said he's eaten them before. My brother tried to clean them and said he almost threw up in the process. I have shot a few and always gave them to the democrats down the road.
