the requirements are absurdly low dude

So you didn't read the rest of my post. Typical. A 2.5 GPA doesn't deserve a scholarship. That's skating through high school. The same student is highly to drop out of college after a semester or two and is doing nothing but taking money from a more deserving student. It's also ridiculous that a family with an income of $150k plus has the same access to these funds as a family with an income of $60k.
People on this board bitch about entitlement left and right and this program in its' current state is one of the most entitled programs I've ever seen in my life.
So you butt the frick out unless you can get some perspective.

I though 250k was the cutoff for rich.

that happens, too
and the GPA isn't the issue. the standardized testing scores are the bigger issue
if they raise the GPA, high schools will just enact grade inflation to ensure their students get TOPS

I agree with you SFP. I just threw out GPA as one example of the low standards for admission into the program.

No. No it is not.
There are many more egregious wastes that need to be addressed first. Stop fixing ALL the problems of off my hard work. How about fixing some of the corporate and social welfare abuse first.

If you look at Federal tax brackets, it is actually 230ish.
Those were Obama's standards of "rich".

while i agree
TOPS is both of these things
everything needs revision and a haircut

TOPS is ridiculously easy to achieve. Raising the standardized test scores needed to achieve TOPS won't happen because we've already established that standardized tests are racist.

Scoff all you want. But the stats are awful. In California for instance, they weed out the higher scoring Asians and whites in favor of extremely marginal blacks and hispanics for spots at places like UCLA and UC Berkeley. Which may satisfy your sense of social justice. You check back in on them two years later and a scandalously high number of them have failed out or transferred in to schools like Chico State where they (academically) belonged in the first place. And those asians and whites who were sent to lesser schools disproportionately transfer in to elite schools after their freshman year. That is how social engineering works, it makes everybody feel good, inevitably fails, and we politely pretend we didn't notice it.

yeah the marginalization of asians has almost changed the definition of minority to that of obscenity: we know minorities when we see them
Posted on 2/14/16 at 11:40 am to Sid in Lakeshore
Its a waste of money when you only have two universities in the state that have over a 50% graduation rate.
In case you wondering that stat is for the white students.

I read your entire post and you can kiss my arse.
The entire program was started by private funds (Patrick F. Taylor of Taylor Oil) in order to get the best and brightest to "stay home". Many lobbied for the state to fund a similar program, in order for it to be successful and keep many of LA's young here. The intent is not to serve the poor or the bright. It is to serve all LA students who wish to stay in LA.
Your opinion from afar is not needed or wanted.
If it is too costly, tighten up the admittance. Perhaps make a work requirement once you graduate or drop out...
There is NOTHING egregious about giving middle / upper-middle class families a (partial) break on in-state college tuition that they are already funding through their exorbitant taxes.
Deleting this portion of my post: "The egregious part is that those that pay little to no taxes get the same or greater break", cause sometimes I get a little worked up.

Yup. I experienced that the hard way. LOL
Back in my Progressive days, when I thought I was making a difference risking life and limb going in the hood to help black students, I made the mistake of insinuating that Asians were a minority. Damn near cost me my job/career.
Needless to say that changed me forever.
Posted on 2/14/16 at 11:41 am to SlowFlowPro
Yeah it's kind of absurd how Asians and (dot) Indians don't qualify for most minority scholarships.
Posted on 2/14/16 at 11:42 am to SlowFlowPro
For all practical purposes, "Race in America" means "black". Other minorities are only included if and when they can buttress the case of the Racial Grievance Lobby. When they can't, it's like they don't exist. The last time you heard an "Asian-American" bitching about America was probably never.
Posted on 2/14/16 at 11:42 am to LordSaintly
what's absurd is their large support of the very political beliefs that lead to those policies
if i were a political strategist for an ideology trying to change that system, i'd target the frick out of most asian groups
there will be a tipping point at some point where they won't put up with the marginalization they face within liberal thought

I liked your post. But I don't know about this last one. Obviously (if you buy into the TOPS premise in the first place) you would want full participation for deserving students. Remember, the idea is to turn the next generation INTO taxpayers even if their parents weren't.
