re: A sad day to acquire new guns

Something else to consider w/ guns and other personal items when someone passes is to have the father/grandpa etc help make some decisions before they pass. Either in the will or in gentlemen agreements w/ the siblings so that there is some equitable division on who gets what and then the parent/grandparent has some input so if there are sentimental reasons for the choices they can be made. Its better to make the decisions prior to a passing – after the passing there is lots of stress and unfortunately greed as well enters into the equation. My grandmother and wife’s grandmother did this before they passed so when it came time to divide items it was already predetermined and no in fighting occurred.
Nothing worse than someone getting something who doesn’t appreciate it and sells it immediately when others would really like to have it.
Sorry for your loss

Sorry for your loss. I recently lost my last two grandparents. My uncle took the guns and stored them for a few months. He wanted the rifle, so he kept that, and let me take what I wanted from the rest. Nothing too valuable, just wanted some because they were my grandfather's. I got an old cheap .22 revolver, a Long Tom 12, and a Red Ryder BB gun. Mainly for my daughter and son to learn on in a few years. He kept the pellet gun and a pistol to give to his grandson when he's of age. And his daughter got the gun cabinet to store her husband's guns in, so we all got a little something.
I couldn't imagine sorting out 20 different ones among family. But then again I was the only grandson on either side of my family.

Sorry for your loss. It is a sad day, but every time you look at the guns you got you'll think of your Dad.

I'm pretty much going to designate which gun to which child. I already made direct gifts from the collection this past Christmas.

He really wanted a 50's Colt 1911 so I'm just going to let him choose first and he can choose that one. It's the best gun in the collection and he really seems to want it.
Sorry for your loss.
On the bright side, obviously you and your brother have a good, solid relationship. Your decision to allow him to pick first is a wise, generous gesture that should eliminate any resentment in the future over who got what.

We did this with my dad's stash. We put them all out on a table and took turns oldest sibling to youngest until they were all gone. A very sad and taxing day.
My dad will be gone 5 years in March and there is not a day that goes by that I don't think about him.

We have a great relationship. I let him choose first, he picked the 1911 and then told me "Pick the others that you want, this is the one I really wanted". Another awesome gesture.
