The Cisco modem/router they give you is a pos.

I want to get a stronger one. I've been reading about how if you buy it from someone other than cox then it will never update the firmware and eventually give you big problems down the road.

I was looking at one of the surfboards that is approved by cox.

Is this an issue others have had buying a wireless modem/router through cox?

Any recommendations other than the surfboard? Looking at the new 6900, might be overkill though.

I bought the Cisco docsis 3.0 modem (just a modem) from Cox for $50, and use my own router. Works fine.

What speed do you have from Cox? I have 100 MBps and went with an ARRIS SB6141. I consistently get 100+ MBps from it. Combine that with a good Netgear router and you're good to go.

I had the same issue with you. I already had a router, but ended up getting the Motorola Surfboard that I was recommended from here and it's been absolutely fantastic. Haven't had disconnection issues since I switched.

This is what I use and I've bought for family/friends. Market flooded with them because not compatible with Comcast any more, but works fine for Cox. Docsis 3.0 8x4

used Cisco DPC3010 for $16

I bought a new router/modem combo this week and I have Cox. I bought THIS and it works great. Its on Cox's approved list of modems and it took 5 minutes to set up.

Strength is much better than the Cisco POS and it is also much faster. I did not run a speed test with the old one, nor the new one yet.
