How can it cost essentially the same?

You end up paying $750 over 30 months plus your bill.

You end up paying the exact retail value of the phone plus tax. You pay the tax up front, and then the price of the phone is divided into installments depending on your choice.
Straight from AT&T's site:

AT&T Next 24: Trade in and upgrade after 24 installments; 30 installments to payoff.

AT&T Next 18: Trade in and upgrade after 18 installments; 24 installments to payoff

AT&T Next 12: Trade in and upgrade after 12 installments; 20 installments to payoff.

AT&T Next with down payment: 30% of the device cost down and trade in and upgrade after 12 installments; 28 installments to payoff.

It's really not difficult to understand.

I used to get a new phone for a penny or five dollars and that was it I just signed a two-year commitment and continue to pay my bill.

Well, that's gone. Now you have to pay full price your phone, whatever phone that may be.

In his mind he paid $5 for the phone not $750.

Using made up numbers, here is what they are trying to explain to those that don't get it:

Before, you bought a phone for $200 and paid(without knowing) $15 a month(forever) to subsidize the rest of your phone.

Now, you pay $25 per month(knowingly) until it is paid off.

Trade in and upgrade

This is the part that I flat refuse to do.

Basically, I would have paid X months of the phone cost, but then have to give the phone back to you in order to upgrade.

So, I effectively bought 70% the phone, but I'm going to give it back to you for free for the right to upgrade sooner?

Hell no. That's a rental, not a purchase. Unless I'm getting a portion of the money as a credit toward the cost of my next phone, I'll pay the phone off, keep it, and upgrade later.
