The corporal punishment thread got me thinking that our punishment game has been off for some time. We are blessed with generally great kids, but we often struggle to think of effective punishments when the occasion calls for it.

I grew up with frequent and meaningful spankings, and we are not opposed to them...but two of my 4 kiddos are getting a little too old. Plus I watched a coworker have his life ruined by Child Protective Services over a small mark left by a spanking.

What are your go-to punishments, especially for 8-11 year olds?

My son kept back-talking my wife this weekend, so I handed him a bucket and told him not to come back inside until every acorn in the back yard was picked up. Maybe he'll appreciate inside chores more now.

Probably didn't accomplish what I wanted, but I was fighting from smacking the crap out of him.

NONE!!! Let'em run wild, do whatever & say whatever! !! Wouldn't want to "stifle their creativity or personality" or anything. I'm not getting involved in this again.

It's all about assertive discipline. If you are active in the kids' lives, you will know what punishments will be the most meaningful to them. Also, the delivery method of the punishment is the most important part.

they need to know that they are receiving a disciplinary action, because they made a choice to break a rule, not because you are mad or just being a dick.

My daughter is almost 3 and the most effective form of punishment for her, by far, is taking away toys.

All we have to do is threaten it, and she straightens up real quick.

I make my son copy George Washington's Rules of Civility, clearly and legibly. If he really fricks up, I will make him use blue and black ink on every other word. If that doesn't work, I guess I will have to imprint a contorted bass or twelve point buck on his arse. That would involve me going out and getting one of those awesome hand-tooled belts though.
