I think he would have taken a step down for more than double the money

Title should have been:
"Wisconsin unwilling to pay for top notch defense"

I mean I'm sure everyone one would like a top 5 D for a top 50 price. That's not how this works...
Saban is not at bama bc he wanted to live in Tuscaloosa, it's for the 7 million other reasons per year.

Many "fans" can consider it whatever they want. The rest of us live in the real world and realize it was a major upwards move.

He's catering to the audience. Everyone in CFB knows that is a huge step up.

Didn't mention how many national title games the Badgers have competed in over the last 60 years.

The key word is fans. Fans always have an overinflated view of their own teams. I can guarantee you that those in the know don't view it as a lateral move.

Funny stuff

Dave Aranda left the football program after three acclaimed seasons to take the same job at LSU, a step many fans viewed as a lateral move

why can’t the athletic department, which ranks in the top 10 nationally in revenue,

until UW goes all-in on athletics, recruiting shaky students and paying coaches astronomical sums

I do think UW should make its policy for special admissions a bit more flexible

I like Wisconsin but that writer is a smarmy count. frick his elitist attitude. The academics at UW would rather the football team suffer than pay the coaches. Never mind what athletics can bring the university. No need to shite on others because your own leaders are short sighted assholes.

Does not compute

But seriously even before the salary why would they think this is a lateral move? LSu is an A program, Wisconsin is a B program. LSU has a lot more talent than Wisconsin, which rarely recruits NFL caliber players by comparison. Wisconsin is a solid football school, but they arent a "championship" or high level football institution.

Sure, they've won a few Big Ten Titles recently, but were they any good really?

2010 championship team that went 11-2 lost to mid-major TCU in the Rose Bowl.

2011 championship team that went 11-3 lost to Oregon in Rose Bowl.

2012 championship team went a shitty 8-6 losing to Oregon State OOC and then Stanford in Rose Bowl.

So they've been known for winning the Big Ten when it's way down and go on to lose their bowl game. In 2014 we saw what happened when they played the worst LSU team under Miles, but still went on to win 11 games, winning their Big Ten division. Next year will be more of the same probably. They won 10 games this year getting pummeled by Alabama in a very very weak Big Ten (division especially).

Next year will just be more of the same for them, have a "solid" season where they get beat by us and win 10-11 games in a weak division.

As for me? I like that UW can play in Final Fours and Rose Bowls without selling its academic or financial soul. I like that UW is a university with a football team and not the other way around. I like that UW recruits athletes who can entertain a nation not only with their basketball skill but with their intelligence and humor. I like that UW keeps athletics somewhat in perspective.

Oh he really left the reservation with this part
