Shot a sitting hen swimming into my spread earlier and she never surfaced. Has anybody else experienced this?

Went under. Swam away. Hid.

I have one or two every year that hit the water and are never seen again...I think they dive and die while holding onto some vegetation or something like that. Always pisses me off to lose a bird that I know is dead...

You didn't kill said duck

She was 20 yards away dead in my sights and never flew off. No way I missed her.

you may have hit her with a few bb's but you most definitely didn't kill her.

Monday morning I worked my way back into the spot the woodies were wanting to be in. I shot two with a single shell and both crumpled and fell like rocks out of the air. I heard them splash down as I turned to follow other ducks departing. The grass/weeds I was in were so thick I could hardly wade and the water was above my waist. I searched for 30 min for those two birds. Never found either.
woodies are the worst about the evasive death dive if the hit the water alive in my experience.

Yup, and green wing teal are a close second.
Watched one crumple, hit the water, immediately dive and then saw it swim 25+ yards underwater (the water was fairly shallow and very clear). It popped up in the middle of my teal decoys and swam around like nothing happened until I rolled it on the water. Just unbelievable what they can withstand sometimes.

you (a) shot a hen...(b) on the water...(c) and lost it.
this is the worst thing in the history of ever.
you should pray for forgiveness.

This is the answer. And, BP, woodies are really notorious for this.

You didn't kill it. Dead ducks float.

What's wrong with a and b? Are they not legal? And have you never lost a duck?

shooting ducks on the water is bad form
shooting hens is frowned upon by many
shooting a hen on the water is something only a youngster would do
