What singer/band SHOULD have had a better career than they did? For whatever reason.

Jem (not the Holograms one) a few really catchy tunes she actually wrote...then POOF
Save Me
They
Venus Hum (Lisa Loeb's looks didn't hold her back... so the same mold + electronica + better voice shoulda done better)
Hummingbirds
I Feel Love (Donna Summer cover) - LIVE w/Blue Man Group
Here's my "off the radar" choice:
Reflection Theory (Dallas-based band that opened for Pet Shop Boys, Erasure and other big artists on their TX tour legs in the early 2000s... but split up after 1 EP)
Don't Promise Me think: Shiny Toy Guns for the rave scene
It's Been Too Long features their very talented female "other" lead singer... an acoustic feel
Another Light Trippy down-tempo groove

The Cult.
I know they were big. I just feel they should have got bigger. They were just a band that me and one buddy only seemed to get. Everybody else only knew the club songs. She Sells Sanctuary and Rain.

I always say The Kaiser Chiefs.
They have a really nice following in the U. K., but never really caught on in the USA.
Best songs are "Ruby" "Modern Way" and "I Predict A Riot"

I could list dozens of acts. Hundreds really.
Off the top of my head:
Big Star
The New York Dolls
Moby Grape
Love
Hackamore Brick
Gram Parsons (much bigger dead than he ever was alive)
Gene Clark
Tracy Nelson/Mother Earth
Steve Young
Ry Cooder
Richard Thompson
The Flamin' Groovies
The Blasters
The Long Ryders
The Beat Farmers
The Old 97s
Big in the UK but not US:
The Small Faces
The Move
Roxy Music
Mott The Hoople/Ian Hunter
Fairly successful in the UK, unknown here:
Fairport Convention/Sandy Denny
The Pretty Things
Blue (Scottish band of the '70s)
The Thrills

Pretty much every band I see.....The Donkeys.....Centromatic......Pokey LaFarge.......Slobberbone.....The Gourds..... Built to Spill.....the more I learn about how big labels generate flase hype about their bands the more I realize making it big is a function of schiterism......

quote:I listed The Blasters, Long Ryders, Beat Farmers, and Old '97s as well. Essentially Cowpunk and alt.country are two genres that never really made it -- somebody once described alt.country as "the genre with more bands than fans".
The Gourds

Of all the "mainstream" rock types of the mid-80s to the early 90s...
The Northern Pikes (shades of Smithereens, The Hooters, Drivin' n' Cryin, George Thorogood, etc...) Biggest stumbling block IMO: From Canada
She Ain't Pretty probably their best known...
...but their BEST song is easily Dream Away Really great tune.

Definitely. Huge fan of the Smithereens. Everyone I've introduced to their music has become a fan.

I'm gonna keep it local and go with Potliquor, The Radiators and the subdudes.

I always thought Rachel Sweet and Mink DeVille should have had more success then they did.

Agree with:
Blasters
Smithereens
I'll add:
DEVO
Jason and the Scorchers (yes Kafka alt country)
Kyuss
Dwight Yoakam, he has a following but his entire genre has cast him out, you never hear a DY tune on a country station.
The one that makes me scratch my head though:
The Replacements: how much good shite do you have to put out to get recognized?
