Rest and consistent stretching, even when not exercising, is the only thing that has ever helped mine.

Elevate in a hot tub followed by cold compress will help short term as well.

When I struggled with splints, I was skinny AF.

Stretch calf and hamstring that will help a little. But the only way to get the pain to completely subside is rest, and elevation never hurts.

Lay a towel on floor in front of you. Pull the towel under your feet with your toes, one scrinch at a time. This was advice from a HS coach 35 years ago. Don't recall if it was to treat or prevent.

two years rest.

did it for me.
I could run again without discomfort. it never came back.

to the person saying lose weight. when I got them, I was in perfect shape, age 19. but I was running miles nearly every day. basketball and tennis in season.

They're usually a result of poor running form. Strengthen your calves and work on your breathing. Sounds weird but it'll help. I've only had shin splints once in my life and it was when I strained a calf muscle and was trying to run without hurting it worse.

ETA: it looks like you run cross country so your breathing is probably solid. Just work on strengthening your calves.

I used to have shin splints, knee aches and all kinds of issues after running. My doctor told me to either walk or ride a bicycle instead. I have been walking now and I don't have any of the issues that running caused.

After treating them you need to try to prevent them. Stretch and work on your heel striking. And when you can, get fitted for some shoes that match your gait.

1. Go to a foot doctor or somewhere you can get fitted for shoe inserts. This will help alleviate future foot / knee / calf problems. Who knows, maybe you don't need them.
2. After you've investigated #1, go to a real running shoe store where they can view your gait (with your inserts in your current shoes) and recommend a shoe that offers proper control. Buy some good shoes. You may spend some $$$ this first time.
3. Once you've figured out which brand / type shoe works for you and you need to replace them, you can find last year's model online for half the price of the new model found in stores.

Follow this advice you should be able to run as much as you like.
