Probably because you aren't locking it down enough. Properly done the chuck will tear metal off the bit shank snap it off before slipping.

There are companies that rebuild battery packs. I had one rebuild two of the 14.4V DeWalt packs for the drill/impact driver set I gave to my gf, work better and last longer than factory batteries for the same price.
