Taking today's college football back to 1990

No playoffs in those days.
Big 10/Pac 12 champs went to the Rose Bowl.
SEC champ to the Sugar Bowl vs TBA
Big 8 champ to Orange Bowl vs TBA
Fiesta Bowl was TBA vs TBA, if I remember correctly.
Clemson would be playing either Bama or Oklahoma for the title. Slight possibility they might play Ohio State in the Fiesta, but the other two games would be more like a championship matchup.
Old-timers, please comment.

I'll take you back further. The Big Four. Sugar Bowl New Years Eve, followed by the other three on TV on Jan 1. Cotton, Orange, and Rose. Fun times for college football and fans.

The number of bowl games on NYD was great. But, most of the changes now are for the better. It's crazy that the best sport in the world essentially finished with exhibition games for so long. The only thing I dislike now is the number of bowl games, but the general public doesn't seem to mind as they are just TV shows that don't really require fans in the stands, anyway.

Bama would play Clemson in Sugar for national championship. Oklahoma in Orange and Ohio state in Rose...both shite out of luck.

Nebraska and Florida State fans were happy folk.

Glory days, Baw.
Cotton Bowl kicked off about 11am, Rose Bowl around 3pm, Orange at 7pm.
Straight big-time football, no filler.

Iowa would have been undefeated and playing in the Rose.

Right. No conference title games.
So, Iowa and Clemson, both undefeated, playing highly-ranked opponents, trying to impress the pollsters. If they both win, a possible split title, and dueling bumper stickers.

Well, that is a chicken and egg thing because at 11 teams, Iowa probably would have played OSU, MSU, or Michigan and might have lost.

If there's no playoffs, there's no CC game.

Sugar Bowl did flip-flop a couple of times before settling on a Jan. 1 date.

Need more info. Who all had ties? Who went into OT this year?

You do know the Citrus was where the ACC champ went in late 80's?
That's why Clemson and Ga Tech went from about 87-91?

I'll take you back a little further. In the 60's the B1G champion went to the Rose Bowl and no other B1G team went anywhere. Notre Dame did not lower themselves to go to any bowls until 1969 (shafted LSU).

OK, didn't remember that tie-in. Good catch.
