Not completely sure but I thought the Citrus replaced the Gator Bowl as ACC tie in but the Gator had an agreement if the ACC Champ was in a NC game they would switch. It's how Clemson got in Orange vs NU.

Notre Dame did not lower themselves to go to any bowls until 1969 (shafted LSU).

And I believe Charlie Mac gave every team member a small Tiger statue with a large screw.

Sugar Bowl did flip-flop a couple of times before settling on a Jan. 1 date.

The Sugar Bowl was played on Jan. 1st the first 38 years, unless it was on a Sunday then it was played on the 2nd.

It has only been played before New Year's Day 5 times, most recently in '95

I remember the Sugar was a 11 o'clock kick

NBC had the Rose and Orange

CBS had the Cotton

ABC and NBC had Rose Parade before the games. CBS had Cotton Parade.

ETA: the Fiesta was usually Christmas or day after Christmas then moved to NYD. First time I remember it NYD was OU with Dupree.

Did some bowls ever run in the middle of the day against Rose? I thought Gator and Fiesta might have. I kind of remember Harbaugh against Nebraska in a mid-day Fiesta game. Orange and Sugar both at night were awesome.

Not until the mid 90's.

I remember the Cotton ran late one year it was Tech vs SC fiesta was before Rose it was the 11 game.

I also remember ABC missed opening kickoff in NC game Penn St vs Bama.

The Orange used to have the best half times also.

In the 60's the B1G champion went to the Rose Bowl and no other B1G team went anywhere.
Was that way until 1975.

Michigan lost 2 games and tied 1 from 1972-74 and never played a bowl game. They were 0-2-1 against tOSU and 30-0 against everyone else.

In case of a tie, the team that hadn't been to the Rose Bowl the longest got the nod.

And the Big 10 and the Pac-8/10 didn't play regular season games against each other.

Ahh yes, when Number 1 ranked Alabama can lose to second ranked Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl, yet STILL claim the National Championship.
The good ole days were the 70's.

Bama will claim any national championship that isn't securely nailed down.

acc champ may have been tied to the gator/citrus bowl for a short period, but an undefeated and #1 acc champ, i would think, could've gone anywhere to play anyone ... other than that, iowa, bama, and clemson would've played for mythical titles, with bama on the outside ...

they didn't 'claim' anything ... they were awarded the title before the bowl game ...

it really isn't that difficult to comprehend ...
