This very behavior is part of the disease. He needs to concentrate on his recovery, if indeed, he is even trying to recover.

disease
quote:
a disordered or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the bodyresulting from the effect of genetic ordevelopmental errors, infection, poisons, nutritional deficiency or imbalance, toxicity,or unfavorable environmental factors;illness; sickness; ailment.
In order to make this statement, the "incorrectly functioning organ" has to be the brain. Once you allow that, then every behavior that isn't good for you is a disease. By saying this, you're not making addiction more important, you're simply taking away the importance of the word disease.
Addiction is serious but it shouldn't be handled with these black and white talking points. It's more complicated than that.

Better off Ted did a great episode on this issue.

I can get on board with it being a disease. However that doesn't mean you can drink all you want and have no consequences.
I think it is a mental disorder. I think some people's brains are just wired differently and can't stop drinking without help. I don't think it is a disease like cancer for example. Maybe it is just semantics....
I don't think it is a disability as we have come to use the word. Paraplegics are disabled. People with Down's Syndrome are disabled. They have something physically or mentally wrong that cannot be treated.
I've seen too many addicts get help and solve their problems.

Wasn't he given ample opportunities for rehab as well? He did take a "break" at one point in the season (when he came to one of the meetings drunk IIRC)
Either way, good luck finding another even decent job brah. He should've looked to hooker rapist/killer Craig James about how you fare afterwards when you sue.

No, it's not a disease or disability. It's an addiction.

Not sure about mental illness. Probably more depression related IMO. I have brother just out of rehab for this.
Alcoholism and other forms of compulsion and addiction are types of mental illness. You're actually proving my point in not recognizing it as such.
When people hear mental illness they automatically think of depression, paranoia, and mania.
Things like anxiety and addiction are viewed by the general public as examples of someone simply not being able to hack it. They don't want to associate with the types of mental illness mentioned above.

Alcoholism is a fricking choice and anyone who thinks otherwise is an enabler or making excuses. Or both.
You seem to be in the minority with this opinion. I don't doubt that some can quit cold turkey. With so many addicts literally killing themselves every day don't you think at least some of them have tried to quit and just fail over and over?
Posted on 12/8/15 at 10:49 am to TDsngumbo
Well then clearly you've never been around a serious alcoholic, otherwise you would have a vastly different view on this.

It's exactly like a disease, but it is not one.
What is your proper term for a brain's biochemical alteration?
Is Alzheimer's a disease?

Oh for frick's sake.
Say that statement out loud to yourself and listen to how ridiculous that sounds.

I pray one day someone you truly adore becomes an alcoholic. Sometimes, knowledge is often gained the hard way. You're an idiot.

You either fricking pick up a drink or you fricking don't. It's not hard.
I want you to get on pubmed and read literature on compulsion disorders and chemical imbalance. There is a lot that your brain does that is subconscious. These people have motivations to do things even if they can rationalize why it would be a bad idea to do so.

I don't appreciate being told what I know or what I've lost to something obviously not understood by some internet redneck. I overreacted.

"I lost the love of my life to ovarian cancer"
Vs.
"I lost the love of my life to wine"
Now compare those two statements.
If you're standing around a group of coworkers and some guy says I lost the love of my wife to cancer and
You say "oh yea, I lost the love of my life to wine, but she was still alive when I left her."
I would tell you to get the frick outta here.

It's a choice, people. If he was truly addicted and couldn't help himself, he never would have stopped to begin with.
In your example, you clearly describe the behavior of an addict. But then say he couldn't be an addict because he tried to quit?
