Not True Narrative: Firing McClendon put LSU in a 20 year tailspin

This narrative is short sighted and not built in facts.
The untimely death of Bo Rein and the quitting on LSU of Bill Arnsparger put Tiger football in a tailspin. It had nothing to do with McClendon getting fired whom much like Miles got very stale/stubborn with his coaching.

not updating the facilities and not paying arnsparger put lsu in a 7 year tailspin followed by a 3 year reprieve before two bad years.
hell, stovall came within a field goal or less in 3 games from winning a natty in 1982. still ended up ranked 11th.
still won a couple sec titles (outright) and went to the sugar bowl twice and the orange bowl once during the eighties. if archer coulda recruited better he would've been great here.

LSU not willing to pay a top tier coach put LSU in a tailspin.

The Hallman era was the only genuinely 'bad' stretch for LSU.
LSU was the 14th winningest program before Saban, with 7-8 SEC titles and a national championship.

Not really the same situation.
These last 15 years have really propelled LSU into one of the elite football programs in college football.
I can't say the same about LSU football heading into 1982.

McClendon was clearly at the end of his rope, and the criticism was not so much letting him go as in the classless way it was done (something LSU seems to have learned nothing from). Miles' situation is much less clear-cut, regardless of what the negatigers think.

We don't fish in the same ponds we did back then. We're not going to Hattiesburg for coaches, we're going to Tallahassee.

LSU went to 4 New Years Day bowls the first 8 years after Mac. Do you really believe the way we were going with him we would have done that? Also won one SEC Championship in that time frame. You call that a tailspin?. We did go in a tail spinning the late 80's and 90's but it wasn't because we fired a coach that had the game pass him by.

True Narrative: playing head coach musical chairs can and will put your program into a tailspin.
