Yammering about Les's "10 Win Seasons"? Compare non-conference opponents.

A lot of folks are hollering about Les's "10 win seasons" as if they are unprecedented.
I've got this open to 1971, but compare non-conference opponents now with what we scheduled in the past.
We didn't schedule what were called "Division 2" opponents back then like McNeese, Appalachian State, Eastern Michigan, and Western Kentucky.
Our 1971 non-conference schedule was Colorado, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Rice, Notre Dame, and Tulane.
Tulane was usually an easy win, but they were capable of an upset. They were FAR from the train wreck they are now and were still considered a "rival." Rice was usually considered a "breather" but they were still a Division One SWC team that played Texas and Arkansas tough.
For the most part, when you scheduled all Division One opponents from major conferences, you never knew if they'd be down that season or a national championship contender.
Go ahead, scroll through the sixties and seventies and compare non-conference opponents then with these total cupcakes we play now and still often struggle with.
Take into consideration we played ten and then eleven games then, not twelve.
Charley Mac was here 18 seasons, played a much tougher schedule year in and year out than Les--heralded non-conference opponents like Notre Dame and USC, played fewer games,STILL played a tough SEC schedule and had a stellar record.
And he rightfully had to go because he couldn't beat Alabama.
Consider all this ...THEN get back with me and tell me how awestruck I should be over Les's "ten win seasons" and his .700-something percentages.
Wonder what Les's record would be if he played a schedule for eleven years comparable to what Cholly Mac faced every year?

Trying to downplay and discredit wins because you hate the coach.
And you wonder why the media is laughing at LSU "Fans"

Probably better since Mac was overrated as hell.
He also got to play teams like Rice, Tulane, Prairie View A&M, Pacific, and Sewanee in the 60's and 70's. He had 2-3 rent a wins a year. Oh and then they're are teams like Kentucky and Miss State who were never any good back then

I guess you have to bow down to yourself...loser.

It's a valid retort to those who spew out stats without context.

the 10 win discussion is silly. long time ago, there were 10 game seasons and only a hand full of bowls. I wish everyone would shut up about it.

Are you taking the wins away from every other coach that plays equal schedules to LSU and Les in this "stats with context" example to compare him fairly?
Or is this one of those where people act like Miles is the only coach that has a few cupcakes on the schedule?

This can be said about all the power programs throughout the country.

Yes. Good point that I neglected to mention.
You didn't go to a bowl if you were 6-4 back then. Hell, if you were 7-3 you weren't guaranteed one.
That was what Mac faced and I'm not building him up specifically. I'm just comparing his era to Miles's in light of the pumpers acting like Les winning here is unprecedented.

It is time for a change, but LSU's non-conference slate is on par with everyone else in SEC and Les has good success against quality non-cons (Oregon, Arizona State, West Virginia (2), TCU, Wisconsin, Washington).

We wouldn't be having this conversation if we still had 1) the loaded roster we had in 2011 or 2) the Les Miles of 2007 who was still fiery and hungry.
Tell me: would you want the Les Miles of 2015 to be coaching against that kind of non-conference schedule?

I assume this is the OP's retort to those who mention he has the highest winning percentage at LSU. Not comparing to other coaches, just LSU coaches.

When did Les go to a bowl for going 7-3 or 6-4? I'll wait.

He went last year for an 8-4 record.
8-4 is a .666 winning percentage.
7-3 is a .700 winning percentage.
Do you have another softball you want to toss up for me to hit out of the park?
Also ... I do tutor math. If you want to sign up, I'll be happy to try and work with you where you can afford the payments.

I was at that Colorado game in '71. Cliff Branch torched us.

Everyone plays cupcakes. So every good coach should win 80% and be undefeated in OOC games right?
FYI...we play a tougher OOC than most

I agree that it is time for a change. All of those games were at the beginning of the season. Unlike most teams which seem to get better over the course of a season, we always seem to fade. Is it the annual beatdown by Bama? Perhaps. But the team loses focus. We have also underwhelmed in bowl games the last 5 years. Irrespective of Jan 2012, the losses to Penn State, Clemson and ND should not have happened.

Rice,
At one time Rice was one of LSU's oldest non-conference opponents. They were in the Southwest Conference, and were no patsy.

Tulane
In-state rivalry that went back to the 1890's. Used to be a major game with major bad blood between the schools.
quote:
Prairie View A&M,
LSU has never played Prairie View A & M
quote:
Pacific
They've played U of P three times: 1950, 1970, & 1972.
quote:
Sewanee
LSU has a losing record against Sewanee, and hasn't played them since the Great Depression.
Kentucky and MSU are conference opponents, and are still not very good.

Good job you got me. I don't get why we have to punish a man because of the era he played in. Les also has more parity in today's college football than back then and i'm willing to bet the SEC West is better as a whole now than the entire SEC back then. I am not fighting for Les to keep his jobs i just don't get the trying to tarnish his whole career because it didn't end well.
