Combat maybe
But I shot down nearly a hundred during air base ground defense excercises at Lakenheath as they flew over on "attack misssions" back in the day

You could argue that when it comes to an offensive military, Russia is a paper tiger.
Compared to Europe, they're head and shoulders above. If they mobilized and launched an invasion of Europe, say in the next month, they would be little to stop them before they reached at least the Rhine. And it's not that they're just that powerful (which they are pretty damn powerful), it's that Europe is all but disarmed.

I've not heard that. Hmmmm, that's a bit troubling but it could just be saber rattling on the part of the Russians. Only thing that worries me is Putin is a bit of a wildcard. He could be crazy enough to launch a war. I doubt he'd do it, but it's not impossible.

Doing as well as can be expected due to the wife acting stupid.

Heard something about it on the radio on the way in this morning. Apparently he is moving the new SAM system next to the border along with a host of other stuff.

Sounds like the stuff they use to do in Germany when I was over there during the Cold War. Sounds like saber rattling.

This is not a good development.....

Shortly afterwards, the MoD announced three steps to be taken following the attack on the Russian Su-24 bomber, including providing aerial cover by fighter jets for every airstrike, boosting air defense by deploying guided missile cruisers off the Latakia coast, and suspending all military-to-military contacts with Turkey.

I assume that means there's going to be some "accidents" in the skies over Syria shortly

Well, before this Russian bomber was shot down the potential for something like that was already there. Now that the Russians are going to be giving fighter escorts to all their strike aircraft, not to mention having advanced SAM's set up as well, the potential for things like this to happen are even higher. The main difference now is there's a higher chance of the Russians shooting back if something like what happened to the Su-24 were to happen again. So bottom line is now not only is there a chance for another "accident", if it happens again it could quickly escalate into outright aerial combat.

This is starting to sound 1914-ish.

I doubt it comes to that. But it's not out of the realm of possibilities.

I could see some skirmishes to test western (in other words, the U.S.) resolve. If we don't step up, then who knows.

That's because Europe's defense is brought to you by Uncle Sugar.
