Jimmy Smith: Miles time coming to an end according to sources

Les Miles' tenure at LSU may be coming to an end, according to a highly ranked source involved with the decision making process. .
A decision on his future is likely to come in the very near future, with many Tiger Athletic Foundation members ready to move on, and start a new era in Baton Rouge. The 15 million dollar buyout clause that is in Les Miles' contract is what many perceive as one of the bigger hang-ups in making a move. However, the Tiger Athletic Foundation, the athletic programs booster club that funds a lot of the athletic programs for LSU, will not allow the buyout issue to thwart its plans, according to a high ranking source.
quote:
According to a source, Miles met with officials last week discussing his future, and the discussion was centered on how and when the two parties would be parting ways. During the conversation, the realization that Miles' days are numbered set in with LSU's head football coach, who discussed a retirement from LSU following the 2016 season. While that is a step in the right direction for some fed up TAF members, it was not a resolution that sits well with many others, who would like to see a change made following this season.
quote:
"The money is there", one source stated. The issue is how the public, with the enormous budget cuts that hit the university earlier this year, will perceive it. But the fact that the foundation contributed large sums of money to the education department in an attempt to alleviate some of the school's financial burdens, and the fact that TAF and not the school will raise the money, this is of minimal concern for ranking members.
quote:
LSU brass has been vetting other coaches they may be interested in hiring as replacements, and it is apparent that the foundation wants the hire to be an established coach, not a rising star in the coaching ranks. Media outlets have mentioned many names as a possible replacement, but I am told that the group believes they can sway a highly regarded coach at another school, and are not limited to available candidates looking for employment. Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher is the main target for many foundation members; with names like Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney, TCU head coach Gary Patterson and even former NFL coach Jon Gruden being tossed around as well.

Interesting.
So Miles met with officials last week to discuss his future.
And now, we learn that Miles is meeting with the team tomorrow to discuss his future.
This could actually be happening.

In a perfect world, LSU could go ahead and hire the new HC as coach in waiting and let Miles make one last run next year. I'd like to see him make a goodbye tour since so many other SEC fan bases like and respect him. I'd be for it as long as he understood there would be no tampering with the new OC/Future HC

As a highly ranked source, I can tell you that Miles will be here next year and win the national championship. Hundreds of negatigers will stand in line at piggly-wiggliies for tampax and midol.

i don't want dabo. he'll leave for bama when it opens.
fisher would be awesome IF we could get him.
the article said they weren't looking at up and comers, but tom herman with the athletes we can recruit here would be beastly. harris would probably work out well in his offense.
i'm not sure why fisher or sweeney would leave an easy track in the acc to come to lsu. patterson has turned down a lot of people already. maybe john harbaugh if he doesn't want to do a rebuild in baltimore, but i doubt he would come here.
realistically? mullen or herman would be the top two we could probably get with mullen being the obvious choice. two former meyer OCs, but one with more experience as a head coach, mullen is only a few years older than herman.

Good. Sounds like they are executing order 66 very well.

Yes!!! Groundhog Day will roll over! It is really happening!

Lol no.
Would be incredibly foolish on LSU's part to do it now.

That's an important point. Anything less would be a gamble I wouldn't want them to take.
On that note, they're going to have their guy in mind and look for things to start happening with the hire after Bowl season.

no matter if we keep miles or can him, this fanbase is going to continue to be split...feel sorry for the next coach whenever Miles does leave...posimiles are going to let him have it

I am not sure I would want to allow CLM to stick around for another year while a "coach in waiting" is found. What happens if the coach in waiting changes his mind because the school decides to pay what he wants or for other reasons. Imo, this seams way too risky. It would seem the potential hire would need to be someone who is currenly not coaching an is not tied down contractually in order to mitigate the risk. Or, maybe the new hire is currently on the LSU coaching staff and will replace miles at fraction of the cost to help offset the buyout.

I honestly hope that the powers that be and Les come to terms with a retirement announcement (not firing) and an honoring at the game next week as a finale. He does deserve a true Tiger goodbye and send off, and I hope he gets one this Saturday.
