ESPN still has their head up their arse, going all in on their Mizzou narrative

You think over the past 24 hours, when facts got out about the hunger strike dude coming from a wealthy family, that these events may have been made up, that this could all be based on a hoax, and that the Missouri professors and protestors have not conducted themselves in a proper manner, they would hold off on stories like this.
Nope.
Full steam ahead. Doubling down. All in on the "Missouri students had had enough of the racism and finally made a stand and overcame it all and brought upon change that will eradicate racism once and for all" angle.
No mention of the attempts to shut out journalism students. No mention of Jonathan Butler coming from a lot of money. No mention of the lack of evidence of these supposed racial incidents.
Contrast this with the FOX Sports story written today.

quote:
Butler said he was prepared to die. Whether a college football team saved him may never be known.
"I know how corrupt the system is, and I know how much they don't value black lives," he says.
"The football team stepping in. ... If that wouldn't have happened, the school truly wouldn't have responded until after I passed."
Butler walks to his car as the sun rises. By the end of the day, the university will announce the appointment of an interim vice chancellor for inclusion, diversity and equity. Chuck Henson will begin work immediately, the university says. But by nighttime, there are threats of violence toward black students on social media and more tension. Butler has no plans of backing down.
"We need to look at what's next," he says. "It's more than Tim Wolfe.
"So much has to happen on campus."

I'm still on the fence on this whole thing. What's Randal's take?

Because in the last 24 hours you have seen media outlets begin to distance themselves from this story and rethink their strategy on how to cover it, because as more facts get out, the original narrative begins to fall apart.
Not ESPN. They are still going on as if this is 1960s Selma all over again.

Being from a wealthy family means you cant experience racism?
Are black people monolithic?

no, which is why the whole premise behind the recent surge of activism is so freaking stupid.

racism = laws/policies based on race
rudeness = white dude shouting the N-word

Why do you keep mentioning that as if it's relevant? He never lied about it or anything. Do you just hate rich people? Do you burn lower case letter "t"s on people's front lawns to let those richers know it's "time to leave"?

A lot of us have unpleasant experiences, we just don't have a butt hurt , ready made excuse as to why we had that experience.
If a cop or a cashier is shitty to me as a white guy, I think that is a shitty person. Same thing happens to you 10 minutes later and it is racism.

Politically? Yes.
The 2016 POTUS election will show the black vote 93% for Hillary as it would be for any Democrat.
The White vote will split as will the Asian and Hispanic votes. Blacks, though, 90%+.

Noticed this on the OT as well. Let me clarify, by no means do I think Mr.Butler has suffered some massive injustice. But his families wealth has very little to do with the situation at Mizzou. I'm confused why people still keep bringing that up.

Fair, point taken, on a superficial note. But many black people, from my conversations with my best friend(s) and others, seem to have an inherent bond linked to their color, espeicall through the shared experiences of racism, discrimination, and segregation. Thats why you can see a rich black kid pulling hard for the inner city kid from the hood.
We dont have that collective experience, which is why I think its so easy for us to dismiss poor whites or less fortunate whites. We have, in a way, had the true experience of a individualistic and more self-centered society. Those groups had to cling to each other for their entire existence on this planet, due to the social and economic barriers once placed in their way.
I think thats why we dont get why a rich kid would ever associate or fight for the plights of some poor kid. Thats why, to me, why using things that MAKE sense to us dont really fit into how they have experienced things or may see things.
I also think the surge in all activism is partially due to the discrimination some groups have felt and to their empowerment in this new climate. Things are changing, and this isnt, unfortunately or fortunately, ronald reagans USA anymore. Our demographics are evolving and as we embrace more and more different people, the ideals of our country suggest that they be respected and protected just as our class was in the 1940s.

Again, why is this surprising? This is what the media does. This is why it exists.

ESPN is more left wing than CNN.

We dont have a shared history.
As a white conservative male, in the south, we are pretty monolithic. I forget the actual stats, but it isnt far off. Does that say we make our own decisions or not?

I agree, but you are starting to see propaganda outlets like the New York Times, one of the largest propaganda outlets of them all, start to take a step back and become more critical of all of this.
