I would've gambled going to these two talented WR's in the 15-30+ yd routes in isolation all night long
Here's the problem with your theory. We would have lost by 35 if we had done that.
No, the coaches did the right thing. In hindsight they could have thrown more on first down to start the game.

Pernod, we may have lost by 35 - true, especially if we go 3 and out 4-5 times in a row...and don't give our defense some time to catch their breath on the sidelines - so, you say taking the conservative approach of "don't embarrass ourselves early and lose big" is the right approach?? FYI, I've been a big supporter of Miles over the good and bad years, but I'm not below making arm-chair observations that make some sense. Bottom line is that stretching the field and doing anything possible to put Bama on its heels was the only way I saw to turn momentum.

Did you get a chance to peer into a Parallel Universe to see what would have happened?
Dupre and Dural showed that they could get open against Alabama's DBs. We don't know what would have happened if they would have gotten more opportunities, but I don't think it's a bad idea from OP (although, as I said, there are other things that I think also could have worked). The main issues, in my view, would have been pass protection, and Brandon Harris' health and accuracy.
Tim Williams was able to beat the tackles with relative ease, and there was consistent pressure from other spots on passing plays. And Harris was definitely not fully healthy.
