I was told that if you should leave your onboard charger plugged in always when you are not on the water to prolong battery life. Is this true?

3 interstate batts on my fiberglass bass boat (2 deep cycle and 1 cranking). So far so good (going on 3 years).

1 optima blue top in the flat-bottom aluminum boat. So far so good (going on 2 years).

All depends on your budget man. If you've got the funds, go with Odyssey. Most of the others are more or less the same.

Excide from academy. Use and abuse, return and exchange once a year.

Ran interstates for years with no problems, go to the warehouse, see if they have any blemished, or B line batteries, about $40 IIRC.
I just switched to Deca's this year, buddy sold his boat and gave them to me, perfect timing as I needed to replace 2 of the 3, and the other was getting on up in age.
