My 20 year old son is finishing his enlistment process today and Wednesday. When he ships out to boot camp is unknown, though a November date is possible. He's in good shape physically, and will continue to condition more.
Any words of wisdom or advice for him. Thanks

He needs to get done with his initial training and make it to his duty station before coming out of the closet.

make sure that he doesn't get a USMC tattoo before he finishes basic.

He's asking for infantry. Scored an 82 on the "test" and has one year of college.

Post his address once he arrives at boot so we can all send care packages.

If that's what he wants, there's no stopping him.
On the flip side, there are some great careers that will see him leaving Active Duty with technical degrees in Communications, Intel Analysis etc that would also give him a higher security clearance.
If he's going for a career, then Infantry is great.
If he's going for the kicks and college $$ Infantry is great.
If he wants immediate job opportunity after one enlistment he needs to find something else.

He should probably choose something that'll help him when he gets out.

His GT score was 82?
Nah, overall ASVAB.. His GT and other line scores would probably work out in the 120s with that.

Not sure how the test works. Whats it out of and what does a higher score mean? higher pay?

the higher the ASVAB score the longer recruiters call you trying to get you to enlist.

Basically the higher the score the more MOS' you can pick. In the Marine Corps they don't offer many signing bonuses for certain jobs. The score really matters if you're trying to go Nuke in Navy or higher air force shite. Those guys make bank.

Tell him not to volunteer for ANYTHING

All this. I had several enlisted Marines take advantage of their Intel background and top secret clearance, landed nice jobs out. If he wants Infantry, then that's fine, but talk to him about the Post 9/11 GI bill and ensure he uses it.

The correct advice is:
Don't be first, don't be last, and don't volunteer for anything.
As for career, If he can get into intelligence I highly suggest it. The Marines have a very good Counterintelligence program, and their crypto linguists get to hang out in Monterey CA for a spell. Both of these positions will supply him with a TS/SCI which is a valuable commodity to have.
