Didn't LSU take him to Waffle House, or some other low quality restaurant?
Left him at TJ Ribs when they were announcing Archer for the job.

If I'm not mistaken the short list at the time was
Mike Shanahan
Steve Spurrier
Mike Archer
we made a great decision

And LSU would have been a top 10 team for as long as he would have stayed here...............
A mistake by LSU..... And LSU paid for it every time we played FLA.. Except 1997......

I know this for a fact.... he had his bags packed to come to be the coach but someone else became coach.

LSU listened to the players (Hodson and others) that supported Archer. That is why you don't let players pick the coach. Armsparger went to talk to Florida but would never say why he. A couple of months later he took the job as HC

What's amazing to me is that he was so young that he's still in the prime of his coaching career (age wise) and he's the linebackers coach at Virginia. I mean my god the man was a coach of a major SEC program (not as much so at the time but still) and he hasn't been able to get hardly anything serious since.

And Spurrier was pissed enough for October 9, 1993 ("Never forget") - to happen.
I left that game when it was 51-3 (longtime negatiger) and under 5 minutes to play. As I was walking across the quad back to my fraternity house, in a deep depression, with an unhappy date, I heard the Florida crowd go nuts because Spurrier had ordered up yet another bomb. And it scarred me. #neverforget

Back in the day (mid 90s) I recall the story being that Spurrier figured out early during his visit he was there for a token interview, topped off by being taken to dinner at a nice restaurant, and seeing Archer and some power boosters at another table yucking it up.
He decided then and there he would beat Curly Hallman at home 58-3 six years in the future.

My mother was on the Athletic Council in 1987 as was part of the interview team. In Spurrier's interview he was asked if he would leave LSU for the Florida head Coach position if it was open. His answer was (paraphrase - not exact quote) "Yes, of course. That is where my heart is." That turned the Athletic Council off to Spurrier.

And not another team ever offered our head coach until 17 years later.

In your lifetime has there ever been a hint of even a modicum of competency anywhere within the administrative departments at LSU?

As an old timer, I recall LSU board of supervisors ran the hiring process, made choices, and was a very drawn out affair and Spurrier was not offered for whatever reason. They chose who to interview out of about 50 applicants and every school knew if their coach applied. Then when Hallman was hired, most coaches were afraid to apply due to last process. A lot of folks thought Hallman was a great coach, but truth was his success was due to his QB, Brett Favre.

Story Goes that he was almost our coach... After Arnsparger if I remember correctly... But then he didn't become the coach
Dumb arse LSU Admins bought the pleas hook, line and sinker.
They hired Archer over Spurrier, Mike Shanahan and Sam Rigliano. (Saints)
What could have been!

arnsparger left after the 1986 season and didn't hire spurrier until December of 1989. kinda doubtful he tried to screw over LSU or knew he would hire spurrier a whole 2 years later.

I remember some of the women involved in the interview process making "This is so exciting!" quotes, and I wasn't very impressed by the process. My skepticism was justified.

Spurrier and Shanahan weren't exactly known commodities at that point and the thought was that Archer would keep the momentum going.

Miami went after Archer when Jimmy Johnson left, I think it was his alma mater. But LSU gave him a new contract, Miami had just beaten LSU by 40 the month before.

He would have been in BR for 3 years, and left for Florida when they fired Galen Hall.
