Holy crap the NFL has some insane rules

The Colts punted, and one of their players touched the ball first. The ball was going into the end zone and he knocked back in. Now the Jaguars player tried grabbing it and ended up fumbling the football. Apparently the rule is there's no way the jaguars player can fumble the ball since it was first touched by a Colt. WTF kinda shite is that? Am I wrong here?

yeah, once the team punting touches it, it doesnt matter what happens, its the one time you can turn the ball over and it wont count.
It's like a deadball, but Receiving team has a chance to advance the ball, but they cannot be punished by any negative plays.

That is football.
If the kicking team touches the ball first, there is no way they can get the ball until the returner gets full control.

Ok, guess I'm not familiar with that one. i found it odd. Thanks for the reply

Seriously? This rule is in place for all levels of football

How do you not know this

My bad, I've had a few beers and I found it odd. I'm an idiot

College rule too
Usc fans should know it well from their NC game

The punting teams players could volley the ball into the receiving teams players, going for a turnover, so it makes sense.

i've been watching the nfl for years and had no idea that was the rule. weird.

Once colts guy touched it, it was a free play for Jags, they cannot have a negative play happen, either its spotted at touch or the ball is advanced by jags.

Not true, you have to control the ball to "down" it. That's why players are able to bat the ball before it goes into the endzone.

I'm not even sure who was punting now. I've confused the shite out of myself.

This is one of those "little known rules" my Dad always told me about but I never saw in action.
Posted on 10/4/15 at 2:35 pm to ReauxlTide222
Basically if the punting team touches the ball and it's still moving, the receiving team should try and go grab it. There's literally no risk, even if they fumble. But no one does it.

It's called first touching

The receiving team would have the option of A) taking the ball where it was first touched, B) the result of the play.
Players on the punt team are taught to down the ball by picking it up and handing it to the ref. Don't touch it and walk off.

If that wasnt the rule the punt team could just slap the ball off a member of the return team and recover it...
