In Jurassic World the idea of dinosaurs and the parks to see those dinosaurs was around for before they were born. So it's not a crazy idea for them not to be in the same sort of shock. Plus, these guys are getting more brotherly time and adventure than they have ever had before, so it's fun in a sense. They understand their life is on the line and after each small win, you can't help have fun, it's either that or dying.
come on, all of us are aware tigers exist, if one came after most of us we'd freak the frick out. he's spot on. The don't freak out because they are running against a green screen.

Jurassic World was a bad movie. Anybody who sticks up for it (I see there are three at the moment, who are peeved with the truth being told), must be either mentally challenged or very, very young (high single digit/low double digit age).

I am not "sticking up for it," because I couldn't care less if you didn't enjoy something that I enjoyed. I thought it was a fun, enjoyable movie that I didn't take too seriously.

Do you think killing zombies would be fun?
It will be. You know how I know? There's video games about killing zombies.

He's right about the villains. The only one that pops into my head with a movie having more than one great villain that isn't built up over a series is Silence of the Lambs, with Hannibal Lector and Buffalo Bill, but even that is disputable since Lector is not the antagonist.

Jurassic World is not a bad movie: it is slock. Pure glorious slock. When I was watching I kept thinking it was dumb, but it is also something that just really appealed to the kid in me. It made me forget how stupid it was when the T-Rex and Velociraptor teamed up to take out the I-Rex. It's really just the highest grossing B-Movie of all time.

Too many comic book movies.
I believe there's only been 3 all year. Is that really that much?

Laughter is also a surprisingly common way to deal with life and death situations. You see it in many true stories involving military combat. That scene in episode eight of Band of Brothers where they are being shelled by German artillery? They all start laughing when the bombardment is over.

sometimes you have to "lampshade" a point

I mean, what modern film has played wanton destruction well? Made it real?
The Road.

But that wasn't "character-driven, on-film" destruction. I'm talking about onscreen deaths of thousands. Real, visceral destruction.
For instance, I always felt that Independence Day, as cheap as that film could be, made sense in how it handled that stuff. Characters were dealing with that destruction constantly. The President's Wife? The prayer circles? It all made sense, even if only slightly.
And characters dealing with it.
Right, but outside of disaster movies, when does that happen (Man of Steel notwithstanding)..? Weirdly enough, I almost brought up 2012 as an example because millions of people died in that one, but it wasn't some indepth look at people dealing with tragedy though.

Yeah but at no point did even hundreds die in TDK.
Right, but they didn't have to die. the threat of blowing up the two boats (with hundreds on them) or blowing up a hospital is what drove the fear in that movie. And that was definitely all "character-driven" from a fantastic villain.

The thing about their argument to how kids react to Jurassic Park is flawed though.

I get what you're saying about brothers, and that's fine. But they definitely knew this existed..how could they not? Jurassic Park existed in that universe, and (I assume) so did the Lost World incident where a fricking T Rex was waltzing all over San Diego. Even if those events happened before they were born, they would still know about them. That's a prety big deal.

And for the "aware" characters...I think these only came about in sequels or parodies because they finally have the material, world, and audience familiar with these things to throw that in there. It's meta, and meta can't exist without a foundation. There's that in the Marvel universe now. There's that in sequels that are spread decades apart. It's the same as using a joke from the previous movie. But it's a joke of that joke. Meta. Not a big deal really. Nothing to gripe about. Heck, it even enhances the viewing. Jake Johnson was one of the best parts of Jurassic World.
I have less of a problem with the meta stuff than the rest of the things in the article. I dig meta when it's done correctly and used in a smart/clever way (Community was one of tGOATs at that), but not when it's just there to be there.

I'm not sure what you mean by that. I loved JW. It was really enjoyable and super fun. I can acknowledge a movie's shortcomings and still enjoy it. Even the article says that JW was okay and pretty enjoyable.

Exactly. This was how I summed up my thoughts on here after I watched it:
quote:
Best way I can sum it up for me was that there were a lot of really stupid parts/things throughout the movie, the acting was overly bad at times, and it was stupidly cheesy at times. But I liked it because dinosaurs. The fact that it was basically Jurassic Park 2.0 made some of the things I just listed not a huge deal. So while it was pretty stupid at times, I still really enjoyed it.

Unsurprisingly, I agree with almost every word of the article.
Storytelling and character development are virtually dead in modern cinema. Sure, there are occasional gems - limiting it to science fiction films, Moon, Interstellar, About Time, Ex Machina - there are folks out there really trying.
But, other than Interstellar (and only because of Nolan) - none of those films seemed to have been promoted all that much - I did see trailers for Ex Machina, but I found out about Moon and About Time on this board (and thank G-d for it).
But, I sure as hell can't get away from the hype of the next: comic book, FF, Jurassic whatever, (not really) Star Trek, Transformers schlock is about to drop - THOSE I absolutely know about way in advance.
