Last night was blatant proof that John Chavis was never the problem.

And I now fully understand why Chavis left.
Once again, the offense decided to pack it in, punt, sit on the lead, play field position, and rely heavily on the defense to win the game.
Once again, the opposing team had an opportunity to win the game on the final drive.
And, once again, the opposing team effortlessly drove the length of the field into LSU territory, and put themselves in a position to win the game - and no, John Chavis wasn't coaching the defense.
Last night's game was evidence that Chavis was never the problem. Somehow, for some reason, people on this board continue to defend Les Miles' ultra conservative play calling. They defend his obdurate, moronic nature of running between the tackles against loaded defensive fronts. They defend his absolute refusal to attack the opponent while on offense, while instead trying to milk the clock and "wear down" the opposing defense.
After Chavis left, the narrative that was sold by this board was that he was the problem. There have been a handful of games in the past where we were unable to stop the opposing team on the final drive, so he had to go. He was the issue. Despite fielding the #1 defensive in the SEC last year with young players, Chavis was the problem. This is what the LSU fan base has been led to believe.
And yet, here we were, yet again, in the exact same position last night - hanging on by a thread, with the opponent having an opportunity to drive down the field and win the game in the final seconds.
And MSU came incredibly close to doing just that. The game was out of our control, and was MSU's for the taking. I'm not sure how anyone can look at this game last night and come to the conclusion that Chavis was ever the problem.
The problem is tepid, uninspired, incredibly vapid play calling, coupled with a complete aversion to field a dynamic, attacking style offense.
The problem was never Chavis, and the problem isn't Kevin Steele - the problem is Les Miles. And the fact that some fans on here are so myopic that they can't understand this is truly disturbing.

Working overtime today Bee? Do you get hazard pay for having to defend the putrid second half play calling?

What I was impressed by most during the last minute drive was Steele allowing our DB's to play man. Though Ross was shifty in the slot and Wilson had the ability to shield off the defenders, each time the ball was caught the WR was tackled basically on the spot.
With Chavis, we would have seen a zone getting shredded with receivers getting plenty YAC. Ultimately leading to a TD or an easy FG.

Chavis and his d doesn't hold Mississippi State once they got to the 30 last night. LSU was playing balls out at that point. The last play was cover 0.
With Chavis State would have hit another 10 yard pass or two and hit a 30 yard field goal.

2014 - Mississippi State had 302 yards rushing with a 6.2 yard per rush average.
Last night - 43 yards rushing, 1.7 yards per rush.
It's not all about offense, our defense was much better last night and was actually applying pressure.
Good riddance to Chavis.

Actually last night proved that Chavis was the problem. We have the same style offense that we have had every year except 2013 and 2011 and were playing the best qb in the SEC. We stopped them and even without the delay of game that fg would have been a tough one. If we had given Dak ~1:30 vs a Chavis D, State wins.
The offense is not perfect, but having a D that actually stands up and makes a stop to force a long field goal is going to be nice.

Who was our middle linebacker against them in 2014 and who was it last night?

The most successful coach in school history is the "problem"?

Never go full retard.

Something that Chavis' defense failed to do time and time again over the years.
I've never said Chavis was "the problem". But pretending that he was irreplaceable and some stellar tactician is just as revisionist as claiming he was "the problem".
Without game changers like Peterson and Mathieu in 2011 and 2010, Chavis' other four seasons were pretty average, with 2013 being just plain bad, with the best offense we'd had during his tenure.
He is a very solid coach, and will undoubtedly be an upgrade for A&M. But our defense lack big play capability since 2011, and it was time for a change imo.
Steele and O may be just the guys to get the spark back on defense, and I saw plenty of that last night. Including getting a huge sack on the final drive of the game that we failed to do time and time again under Chavis.
