A healthy Brees and an improved O line will have the offense back on track and winning 7-9 games. With another weak year in the South, it may just win the division. Payton's job is safe.
so optimistic...
the rebuilding already started... i'd like to think we're doing it now so Brees can keep us competitive during it.
my concern is we're gonna face adversity and the spoiled bandwagon fans won't respond well. they will drag down the situation
but remember 2009 was a make or break year too...
EDIT- and if we're broken the Pels start in 55 days

Brandin Cooks will save this team.

Regardless this has already happened
I'm sorry to the reasonable ones but this fanbase has been a disgrace recently.

I hate to admit it but I'm pretty sure we are going to lose a good amount of games this year. I think our offense will keep us in the majority, however the last couple of years we have not been able to finish. I want us to do well so bad, I just don't see it happening this season.

i agree, this team is very limited with their talent.
We have no big playmakers on offense, our defense is goign to be horrid
5-11,
who dat

No one, including you knows 2 fricks about how this team will perform. There are posisaints and negasaints. This board for the moment is infested with the latter. There IS talent across the board on this team. We just have yet to play a meaningful down or field the entire starting unit yet. Most of the judgmental fricks here (including you) have doomed this team before taking a regular season snap.
im always positive, almost to a fault. I think this team can win 10 games if everything goes right. We lost so many close ones last year. Our offense will have to carry us again though. If we arent close to perfect, we'll be 7-9 again.

I know it's been beat to death but the lack of quality draft picks and overspending on players that haven't produced dick have finally come back to bite us .
I 100% agree with this.
We have put way too much stock in shelling out big bucks for free agents.
What makes it worse is constantly pushing money into the future, so that when a player does reach the end, we're on the books with a ton of dead money.
The FO philosophy needs to change as far as player acquisitions. More emphasis needs to be put on the draft, rather than free agency. Having rookies contribute on a rookie contract is a beautiful thing. Unfortunately, it hasn't happened very frequently for us recently.
*oh, and a compensatory pick or 2 would also be nice, but we wouldn't know anything about that.
I say tear the whole MFer down and start from scratch.

I think the offense will be outright dominant. I think that's what's lost in this whole debate. It's as if people are assuming that we field one unit, or the other team doesn't have a defense. They're going to have to deal with us.
From what I've seen so far of the defense this preseason:
-the run defense is very stout
- they limit yards after the catch
- the pass rush is still spotty, but it looked better once the starters got extended playing time against the Pats.
I think a couple of things need to happen for the defense to be good enough.
One, I think the secondary can't afford more injuries. Payton is super cautious, and perhaps some of these players that missed time during the preseason would have played in the regular season. Still, it could get real thin real quick. If we're able to make it through the first 4-6 games with our current starting lineup (Browner, Breaux, Vaccaro, Bush), I think we'll do fine. A lot of the starters haven't been starting in the preseason, and even then they've been limiting the offense to underneath stuff.
Two, I think having Ellerbe paired with Anthony will be key. I'm hoping he's ready to go and stays healthy, because if not, Hawthorne will be targeted repeatedly in coverage. He will be our glaring hole in coverage, the spot to go on 3rd down.
Three, I think the trio of Jordan, Hicks and Kikaha can generate consistent disruption, however, one of the younger players (like Tull and Edebali) need to step up at some point in the year. Same things goes for the interior guys like Davison and Richardson, who I both think are going to make the roster. Being able to mess up the timing and moving the launch pad for a quarterback with interior pressure can be devastating to the flow and timing of an offense, and can more disruptive than sacks.

We just need to find out what we do well and formulate our gameplan around it.
The NFL is littered with flawed teams. I am excited to see if we can build momentum through the year. In 09 and 11 we seemingly came out the gates on fire and almost tailspun near the finish line both years.
This year that will not be the case. This is a whole new team that needs to learn how to win together and form their own identity. Rookies mature and breakout players happen. This team can win the division and be a team no one wants to see in the playoffs or we could be medicore...This team will not be terrible.

I completely agree, and I think it's what you saw this offseason, or at least the direction they're trying to head. I'm very hopeful for this draft. It was very uncharacteristic of past drafts. I think there was some arrogance involve, like you could just teach them football when they just didn't have it in them. They fell inlove with physical gifts. This year, every player we drafted outside of Tull was a baller who showed they could play. You could make the case for Swann, but he played corner and safety.

Colston is not above average. No way.
Admittedly, I'm lower on Browner than most. But, that's fair.
Spiller has shown flashes, but to say he's above average is a stretch.
Strief, meh.

Peat
Anthony

None of those are above average right now. Sure they have potential to be.

I don't think that is unfavorable compared to the rest of the league. Hell, if we're truly using average, it's probably more than that
It's unfavorable relative to the good teams in the league. In fact, like another poster said, if you traded Brees for say a Carson Palmer, this would be a 2-3 win team.

Brees' contract is pretty reasonable as it stands right now.

You're in luck, that is what we did this offseason. Hopefully we continue the ideals of building cheaply via draft
