I need a portable laptop with a full keyboard (preferably running windows).
Surface tablets will not work with the testing software.
I mostly need it for research, web browsing, lots and lots of word processing, iTunes, sound recording, and preferably running some older games like Rome and Medieval Total War, the Sims 2 or later, ect. Skyrim would be a nice plus.
What should I be looking for.

I've got no advice on specifics, but you should keep an eye on woot.com -- they have a pretty constant stream of refurbs from several major brands, and sometimes have really good deals. Check all their categories, not just 'Computers' -- they bury them all over the site.

Just curious... what's the testing software and why wouldn't it work on Surface Pro or Surface 3?

The Register just put up a review of 6 laptops. Prices listed are in British pounds in their market, so ymmv there, but you might get some ideas from the reviews.
