It wasn't "blocks" of tickets but LSU players used to sell the tickets allotted for their respective families all the time. Decades ago, LSU would even sell them on the players behalf and give the money to the players. Which seems pretty illegal by today's NCAA standards.

I know someone who sold a block of 100 tickets to a reporter for $500 (around the same time). Players could buy all they wanted.
He told me the only difference now is that the reporter would have put it on ESPN and had the NCAA all over the school. They took care of the players and kept their mouths shut.

This was common practice at most schools back in the day fwiw. Nothing at all remarkable.
