Just wondering about your experience? How risky is it? English riding, jumping, etc.
Any injuries?
Everyone wears helmets now so I would think it's pretty safe?
Thanks for any insights or info on experience in advance.

GF rides as does her kid. It gets expensive as hell. She's had a few falls. It's as risky as you want it to be. If you push the envelope, you can get nicked.

Thanks man.
I guess what has me worried are the stats on horse riding injuries. If I read them right, it's much worse than a motorcycle. Especially for girls.
Mainly interested in the English style jumping injury risk. I hear you on pushing to hard.
I probably won't get anything definitive here just looking to not worry too much about it. If someone shows up that's had a kid with serious injury (head neck or back) then I may have concerns.
Broke limbs, bitten off fingers are ok. Lol.

I had a childhood friend who rode horses....anyways she was riding one day like she always had and she fell off...the horse trampled on her head a few seconds.
She ended up living but had to have several facial reconstruction surgeries
She was never good looking to begin with so you can imagine what she looked like after
Bless her heart

Dressage is another option that's less hazardous.
ETA: At first your child can ride "stable" horses. But if she progresses beyond the typical kiddie stuff and gets serious about it, she'll want her own horse-either own or lease. See what I mean about it being expensive? And there's a pecking order around the barn. The people that spend the most money are the ones who get the most consideration when it comes to things like lesson times and whatnot. It's been an eye opener for me. A lot of really great people, and also a lot of really weird people
A couple of OT chicks are in the horse business. Maybe they'll see this thread.

Wife has ridden since 10-11 years old. Regardless of what you believe, show jumpimg is one of the most dangerous sports there is. Your are allowing a small child the ability control an 800-1500 lb animal and hoping that a helmet breaks the 5 foot fall to the ground.
She has yet to have any major injuries but there is a reason equestrian is one of if not the most dangerous sport.

Yes it would seem that you need your own horse that you know and are used to and that knows you.
That would eliminate one area of risk for jumping for instance.

Yeah I looked at the stats. My girl got thrown this eve and I dialed up the numbers after that. Problem is that the horse riding injury stats blend in all sorts of drunk trail ride injuries, crazy broncing buck injuries, etc. it is clear that the helmet helps. Most of the deaths = no helmet.
Does she jump? If so would she let her kids do it?

My daughter rode horses for 5 years. Western. The girl she rode with broke her leg, as did my daughter. She also got a concussion and got her foot stepped on. Good luck.

My daughter has been riding for 5 yrs or so. I really like her doing so, it's great exercise, and they learn a lot about horses. She is jumping about 3.5' at this time, and she has had a few spills, nothing broken, or injuries.
It's not cheap at all, but overall it's a great experience.

I currently live in a community where this is very prevalent and I do not hear of many injuries.

My sister rode english for several years with only one scary moment, no injuries. Saw a couple, but nothing too terrible. But her trainer was very conservative especially with the younger kids.
I had to sit through so many shows and lessons I eventually started riding western to pass the time.

My daughter has been riding for 4 years doing hunter/jumper. Loves it. She's had a few falls and foot stepped on. One fall caused a minor fracture in her hand. She was more pissed that she had to wait a few weeks to ride again She never rides without a helmet.
I worry sometimes, but realize she could get hurt playing softball or any other sports activity. We don't own a horse, but live next door to Farr Park in BR. They offer lessons in English and Western and you can use their horses.
We recently leased a horse during the summer. Every damn day she begs for us to buy one......

My son is state champion in lead line but he rides about once a week. No helmet but probably should. Fell off once and busted his lip. Thats about the only injury I can think of.
Me and my wife have been riding and showing/roping for as long as I can remember so its kinda in the blood. As a kid you would be pretty board not to ride around my house
