I need Word for my son to be able to upload some homework stuff, and I am not paying 99 bucks for it. What are my options?

I'd say your best option would be to quit being a cheap arse and buy your kid the document and office suite that 99% of the corporate world use... Microsoft Office.
Seriously its $6.99 a month for fricks sake. LINK
If you insist on being a cheap arse, download libre office and save the file as a .docx from the drop down menu.

This reminds me how my laptop I bought in 2011 came with Microsoft Word/Excel/etc Starter which isn't the fully featured office.
4 years later I still just use that for that computer.

Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and One Note for $119
May as well have the kid start learning them now.

Web based Office version is free. I haven't found anything that I can't do on it versus the "normal" version. It has Word, Excel, PP, & I think One Note. Plus you can access it from any computer or cell phone. I think about all you need is a hotmail email account.
edit - actually you don't even need a Microsoft email acct.

You can download a trial version of Office 16 that is good for either 120 or 180 days.
