Given it's location, it is perhaps the most underachieving food city in America.
Naah, it's not that bad, people just need to stop comparing BR to Chicago, New York, or anywhere else people go on vacation and compare it to similar sized metro areas. If you take this list of MSA's by size and look at the 60th-80th largest metro areas (BR +/- 10 spots), I think BR is really toward the top of that list as a food city. New Orleans for its size is really an outlier in the food arena, but that's nothing for BR to have self-hate over.

Fleur de Lis is overrated. That said, they still have the best pizza in Baton Rouge. There just are't many good pizza restaurants in town, much less in the state

FDL is disgusting. The place is well past the "charming" point. I went while it was raining and the entire front wall (which is a frosty window) was leaking so they had it lined with mildewed towels.
The food doesn't come close to making up for the condition of the place. I got their pizza again recently to see if I just misjudged. Nope. Still bad.
I had a friend work there and she said the owners were horrible to work for. I've also seen people kicked out for saying the word "damn" at their table because it is a kids restaurant.

Where have you eaten in BR that you did like?

I actually picked a pizza up from there this past weekend after not having one for about 4 years. It was okay but I remember it being much better. Johnnys imo taste better than FDL now. I dont think Mike Andersons is bad just not spectacular. The one dish I really like there is the Quails and Tails.

Mike Anderson's gets shite on by this board every time it comes up. It is hardly overrated. It is despised.
And it has a few great dishes. Best fried shrimp in town and the stuffed fish is great.

By actually listing your go to places, your original post sounds even sillier.

Waaat? You don't take anybody seriously that puts Applebees in their overrated list?
This ol' song and dance on this board. Yay a shite on BR thread.
I too have traveled the world and still manage to find quality dining in lowly BR. Nothing exciting about the food scene here, but welcome to most of America and cities the size of BR, but I'll take our south Louisiana cuisine and fresh seafood over many other parts of the country. Carry on....

Are you saying those places aren't good

I'm saying you picked some good places and are in essence comparing them to places that most people don't rate highly at all

I agree. I've never had a bad meal there and some of their dishes (quails and tails) are damn good. Some of their dishes are unspectacular for the price but the hate is over the top.

OP's list vs. Trip Advisor rankings for BR restaurants(none of the OP's list are on the "Best of" for Yelp or Zomato). Not that their list is "right" by any stretch (they have City Pork/City Pork II in the 100's), but still kinda interesting to look at.
TJ Ribs - #24 (Highest rated BBQ place)
Mike Andersons - #49
Fleur-de-lis - #149
Pastime - #337
Applebees - #537
On a related note: It's interesting that the Venn diagram of "Regular citizens who write reviews for restaurants on the internet" and "People who go to Applebees" intersect at all.

Yes. Your preconceived notions regarding the general public of BR is false.

I have never known a person to go to Applebees in Baton Rouge... I've been here my whole life.

Upvote.
Not a BR native but I've been here since 2009 and the restaurant scene is growing and getting better, IMO.

Fleur de Lis changed management a few years ago.
Its no where close to what the original was long ago
