Seattle for a Day

Going to be in Seattle for a day this weekend (and unfortunately only a day) so I wanted to see what people experienced with the city would recommend we focus on.
Weather's beautiful so we're thinking of dividing our day in half: spend first half in the city, seeing the market being near the water etc. Then in the early afternoon heading out to Ranier and seeing that (never seen a mountain of that magnitude).
Anyone have advice on visiting Ranier? And what would you do if you had 4-5 daylight hours in Seattle proper?

Call and look at weather before making the trip to Paradise. Absolutely possible to get up there and have no view of the mountain because it's socked in.
They have a webcam you can monitor.

Are you flying in?
If so renting a car?
Figure you will lose an hour travel time from SEATAC to Downtown (and back) with travel, maybe more.
Space needle is going to take too long, Columbia Center is no wait, taller, but all inside.
Pikes is like the French Market and Riverwalk combined.
Lots of places to eat and sightsee.
Rainer is about two hours from Downtown Seattle, but only a little over an hour from the airport. (Downtown and Rainer are different directions)

Rainer is not all that close for a half day trip and traffic in Seattle is often miserable.

Get up early enough to have breakfast at Portage Bay Cafe. Easy walk/ride to the market and waterfront from there (about 1 mile). You can take the long way down and pass by the Space Needle and through the Olympic Sculpture Park.
As for the rest, it depends on how long you will be staying before you head to Ranier. The area around the Market, especially heading towards Ranier, is nice for strolling. The ferry ride to Bellingham is nice as well and Bellingham is a cool area, but you would have to allocate at least 60-90 minutes for that diversion.

One day? Nix Rainier or any other excursion outside the city if you plan on spending any time downtown.

Do what I did. Take a picture of Rainier on the flight in.

Go on a brewery tour. They have like 50 breweries in Seattle. It'll take 3 hours and you can get nice and drunk and then go walk around the city.

It doesn't take an hour at all to get from the airport to downtown unless you're in straight up rush hour.

and honestly, if its just one day, just stay in Seattle
eat, drink, shop...walk around downtown
maybe go up to Ballard or Fremont if you want to get out of downtown and see more of the neighborhood type places
if you want to leave the city, I'd rather take a ferry to Whidbey Island than try to squeeze a trip to Rainier in

Usually take 509/99. Takes around 30-40 minutes. The lightrail is about 3 bucks, takes about 40 minutes as well.

You're right, I read it as an hour each way.

Yeah, you need way more than a day if you wanna go exploring. I'd recommend touring the Olympic Peninsula over a few days. I'm convinced that Lake Crescent is one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
I'd definitely take advantage of all the breweries in Seattle. They'ree awesome

I understand the concern about concentrating on one or the other, but I'm still keeping the option open. We've successfully pulled off equally ambitious stunts in the past and had zero regret in doing so. Kind of a weird reality we operate in. Also why I only have one day
What are the best things to see/do downtown to take in the city's essence?

I don't see the point to drive up the mountain and drive back down without hiking. You can see the magnitude of Rainier from the city. Just a trip to and back from Paradise will be 5 hours. In those 2 1/2 hours to get there the weather may change and make the trip pointless. Plus the wildflowers already bloomed so you missed that. There is enough to do in Seattle to keep you occupied.
Pike's Place is a must.
Underground Tour for a cool history lesson
A local coffee shop
Shopping
Take a ferry
Woodland Park Zoo (not downtown)
Check out a recreational marijuana shop (not downtown)
Chihuly Garden & Glass (near)
Space Needle (near)
Uber is awesome
