First off, how much is the sofa you bought? Protection plans usually run roughly 10% of the cost of the furniture. So unless you paid 4k, you're getting fricked.
The protection plans I am aware of does not include them "coating" anything. It's a dry warranty meaning if you were to get any kind of stain or rip/tear, they send someone to your home to repair. Any chemical (scotch guard) you put on your furniture, will void your manufacturers warranty.
