You can teach kids the value of competition while also pointing out that you don't have to win to enjoy athletic competition

Unless it's some grandiose thing, this is all these things are...a token, a bobble...a fricking piece of memorabilia to stand next to the team photo of that season...that they will almost certainly end up tossing out later in life. but for a few years when they're still just kids, having that little thing is just a tangible thing to glance at and help remember a short time in their lives.
Never mind...I forgot...
