PTs/Sports Guys. Knee "Pop" question UPDATE and thanks

Son was jumping up yesterday in PE to block a shot and heard and felt a pop in his right knee on the lateral side. No swelling but it's stiff and he says that it feels unstable and catches/locks at times. He said he rubbed the area and he felt a "pop" as if something went back into place.
Appt is already made with Dr. Perry in Lafayette for Tueaday but can I assume it's potentially ACL related or could it technically be any of the ligaments or something else altogether?? Not going to Google it as it'll probably have him with a prognosis of death and no it's not aids or Ebola.
Thanks.
8/18 Thanks guys for the help .. Saw Dr. Perry this am and as I suspected, MRI is in the works. SUspected lateral meniscal tear with ligaments all checking out "seemingly" ok. Likely scope and if it's a repairable tear, repair will be done and crutches for 4 weeks; if not clean out and no big deal. Thanks for the help.

Go to a pharmacy and buy a Mueller elastic knee support sleeve. Rest, ice, keep compressed, elevate. Take him to his physician.
Eta: get the sleeve one without an opening I the front, no straps no Velcro etc.

I don't think people are going to be able to accurately diagnose specific ligament damage from your post.
I can tell you that I once was positive that I tore my ACL...heard/felt a pop when playing basketball, and while the pain wasn't excruciating the next few days, it was stiff and I didn't have the strength or flexibility that I normally had.
It turned out to be a cartilage tear.

He's gonna have to sit the rice harvest out this time.

My momma brain is just hoping it's not acl so I'm curious as to if other ligaments "pop" ... I've been told the pop is classic acl but hoping not.

Could be meniscus , it band, LCL, subluxed patella, plica, cyst, Osteochondritis Dissecans, and about a billion other things

A distinctive pop is not good, but it isn't necessarily a worst case scenario thing. He can drive a truck or buggy fine, but he doesn't need to be climbing up in the hopper and shoveling

Sounds like meniscus/cartilage injury.
Catching and locking are clear signs.
Fixable.
If he can hop his butt up into the tractor to drive the cart, he might be able to operate the foot pedals. But nothing more than that.

With all due respect that doesn't sound like the typical mechanism of injury for a ligament tear or a cartilage/meniscus tear. "Pops" aren't necessarily a bad thing nor do they signify an injury. How old is your son?

does it pop when he bends it? could be IT band. ive had issues there before from running and it seems similar.
keep in mind i have zero medical expertise at all so take what im saying with a grain of salt.

I had the same thing happen and it was a meniscus tear. I did have a dislocated kneecap as well and didn't find out about the meniscus tear for about a month later.

This sounds just like what I have in my right knee. shite has been bugging me for around a year. I never heard a distinct pop though, unlike your son. I think I got it while hiking. There is no significant swelling on the outside of the joint, but there is popping, stiffness, and pain when I squat or bend it. I wear a brace when I work out.
Did you get surgery Perrydawg?

Years ago this happened, I was diagnosed with a patella subluxation, or partially dislocated knee cap. Two months of PT and strengthening, was back to normal.
I felt pretty lucky considering what it could have been.

Son is 18. If it's meniscus I'd be not so worried as I had both of mine cleaned out last year (one in October and one in December) and it was a piece of cake.
He said he climbed into the tractor ok (on his way home due to getting rained out) ... guess he's lucking out into not leveling bins tomorrow .. the climb into the bins and then back up and out isn't easy. Think the tractor is all hand operated and no gas pedals.
eta: Just got home .. said getting in/out of the tractor pretty much sucked and using the brake wasn't too bad. I just didn't have a distinct "pop" with either of my tears.
He's a tennis player and is a senior ... I'm hoping best case is some conservative treatment and he'll be back at everything in no time.
