That was just my thesis...
Subtle brag about college or some shite. Honestly I'm not a hundred percent sure what a thersim is.

No, it's not funny. It's the title of the video.

But at the soldier level, which is the level that contains most of our ancestors, I think the war was about more than that. I think family, pride, preservation of life, and fear of Northern aggression played more of a role for the soldiers than preserving plantation owners desire to own other humans as property.
For sure, toward the end of the war the soldiers became quite disillusioned with the slave owning upper class due to their refusal to make hardly any personal sacrifices for the cause.
It is a testament to the respect they had for their generals and each other that they continued to fight for as long as they did.

Go take a look at most southern states declarations for succession; slavery was one of the biggest reasons.

I think it was about what most all wars are about. Control/Power/Money. And at the time slavery was a big part of that.
So yeah it wasn't JUST about slavery but it was more about that than anything else and was the biggest deal breaker between the two sides IMO.
I do believe the South cared more about keeping slavery alive than the North did about abolishing it. It was just a good justification for the North to rally around.

COL Sidule was my Military History Professor 20 years ago. Fortunately, the class was on Military Tactics and not on the policies that caused the wars. I would have gotten this question wrong on the final exam!
I see he has returned to USMA as a permanent professor. Looks like he is the HMFC of the History Department.

It was a about a state's right to impose slavery.

Was is "about" slavery? Kind of. It was more accurately about state's rights and tariffs; however those issues were manifested in slavery. I think it's a gross oversimplification to say slavery was the cause but not necessarily incorrect.

Why did the North free their slaves 2 years after the war started?
