I mean...do you know that the person in front of me is going to brag to others about it? If it makes them feel better buying some dude's breakfast, is that so bad?
I've never been a part of one of these chain things so I didn't know the protocol.

This wasn't an interesting or edgy viewpoint when I heard it on the tv show Friends back in the 90s when you were in preschool.

The difference is the intent. If you do it intending to do it partially because it makes you feel better, then yes. But you can do it completely selflessly but the end result is you are still drawing personal satisfaction of seeing someone enjoy whatever you did for them.
