Letterman in the 80's and early 90's was the best late night TV ever aired, and the format and tone by which all late night talk shows are now presented.
"Johnny Carson on Line 1 for a Mr. blueboy...would blueboy please come to the courtesy phone?"

I couldn't even tell if that awkwardness was real or them acting.
I think it was mostly real. There can't be too much bad blood there because Wyatt has been on John Oliver's show a few times this season, and obviously he had to agree to be on the finale. I think Stewart was genuinely surprised to see him, was glad to see him, but neither was quite sure what the other would do.

There's a reason that became the traditional style of late-night television. Carson was so good at it - and did it so effortlessly - that he cemented that format as the standard.
Dave's early years he was a goofball TV outsider that poked fun at what a farce the entire industry was and seemed to want us to laugh along with him. As he got older (and the whole NBC/Leno soap opera) Dave seemed to me to become embittered and almost seemed resentful sometimes that the audience was there.

Colbert's identity as of this moment is completely defined for his genius character parody of himself, and he has to move away from that for good if he's ever to be treated remotely seriously
Have you seen the videos he has posted? It's pretty similar the character.
Who knows. I read an interview not too long ago (I really wish I could remember who) after Colbert went off the air. He said he remembered thinking that there was no way Colbert could transfer that character from 2-5 minute bits on the Daily Show to a full half hour over and over again and be successful so he has a "never say never" attitude about him transferring something similar once more.
eta: Don't get me wrong, I don't expect him to be an exact duplicate, but I expect similar humor.

Yeah I don't know why some expect him to be completely different. Largely the same just less political

Colbert is talented. I'm surprised he lasted as long with that format as he did, only because the format limited him. When the entire premise of your show is to parody O'Reilly, you end up with the same show every night.
The new format frees him up so he can diversify his shtick and that's a good thing.

After watching Noah on comedians in cars getting coffee I have no doubt he's a great choice.

I liked Trevor before he was in line for the job. I'm actually really pumped.
Where can I watch the comedians in cars bit?

I finally watched some of his stand up and I'm hopeful that he can pull it off. Noah does whip-smart comedy. My only concern is his grasp of the American political scene.

Wow watching this now.
Seeing all the old correspondence on the show really shows you what made the show great and why it's been in decline lately.
The people he has on now shouldn't be on the same stage as the guys from the past.
ETA:
Holy shite having Colbert on there makes me miss him so much more. Losing the Colbert Report sucks. I am excited about him hosting late show, but his character from Colbert Report might be might favorite TV character of all time. I'm glad Oliver can carry the torch of this show type.
On a lighter note:
I would do crazy dangerous disgusting things for the chance to touch Olivia Munn.
