I'd like to see this made with maverick and iceman as instructors traning a group of cocky young pilots the end could be US vs China in some kind of battle over South China Sea with maverick and iceman being victorious of course

If they could suspend my disbelief long enough to explain why a couple of vice admirals are still flight instructors, I'm down.

Cruise recently said he'd do it with real jets, no cgi. China will never be the bad guys in this or any other movie anytime soon. The overseas box office is too important.

Yeah, let's be honest here since this movie came out 29 years ago, Maverick and/or Iceman would either be long since retired from the Navy or one of them is holding an executive office at the Pentagon trying to become the next Chief of Naval Operations. The only other possibility would be either of them being GS or Contractor instructors.

Not sure if Iceman could still fit in a cockpit.

What?
Two of the best characters in Topgun, Viper and Jester, could easily have been Maverick and Iceman 30 years later.

Well that's a boring movie- I mean the only way a North Korean plane gets within 20 miles of a US fighter is if the guy's defecting and their providing cover.
Hell, that's the real problem with a new Top Gun-- there's no credible adversary-- no one else even does Carrier aviation and you can't do a near future China because they're the second biggest market.
It'll be like the Red Dawn remake where we pretended a North Korea could invade the US while they'd be lucky to even get here if we let them. (Not to mention the slightly awkward part of Red Dawn 2-- where we essentially decided it was cool to make IEDs and blow up soldiers if your country is invaded-- guessing we probably didn't want to distribute that one to Iraq).

Will Tom Cruise play volleyball in jeans again?

Top Gun was made in 86. Viper tells Maverick he flew with his old man on the Oriskany in Vietnam. That puts the action somewhere around 66-69. Assuming Viper was a Lt at that time, that puts Viper as a Commander roughly 20 years later. I think CAGs are usually Commanders or Captains, so its not too far fetched that Maverick could have refused promotion to avoid getting out of the cockpit roughly 25 years after the events of Top Gun.
I'd watch a movie with Maverick in the Viper role. I'd even be okay with some of the plot lines rumored having a girl pilot in the "Maverick" role as long as it's cast right.

Iceman could go out a hero after flying his F-14 into the Alien weapon....nevermind.

Make one up. Problem solved. That's what they did in the first one.
